Trump: ‘I’d like to think that God thinks that I’m going to straighten out our country’

Former President Donald Trump believes God may have had a higher purpose in protecting him from an attempted assassination in July.

The Republican presidential nominee spoke with Fox News’ Mark Levin about the failed attempt on his life during a Pennsylvania rally and that the event has no doubt affected his faith and his calling.

“Has this furthered your belief, your commitment? And obviously, God in addition to that chart, saved your life. He has a purpose for you. Do you think about these things?” the “Life, Liberty & Levin” host asked.

“I think you think like, if you believe in God, you believe in God more,” Trump responded.

“And somebody said like, why? And I’d like to think that God thinks that I’m going to straighten out our country,” he added in the interview on Sunday.

“Our country is so sick and it’s so broken. Our country is just broken. And maybe that was the reason, I don’t know. I don’t know, a lot of people have said that,” Trump said.

The former president again reflected on the many factors at play that positioned him to miss the bullet hitting him in the head.

“I think you believe more, because when you speak to experts, like my sons who are shooting experts. But when you speak to experts, they said there was no chance that he could have missed from that distance,” he said, speaking of the shooter.

“I think he was hurried. I think he was rushed because people were starting to say, like, you know, there’s a guy up there with a gun. And I think he was probably rushed,” Trump continued.

Though he praised the “very brave” Secret Service agents who rushed to protect him on the stage, Trump acknowledged that there should have been better security for the building the shooter climbed atop to fire.

“Now, obviously, somebody should have been on top of that roof. And there was some problems. But I have to tell you—Secret Service. They were on top of me and they were bullets were flying over us—and there wasn’t one of them that said, ‘Oh gee, I’m not doing that,’” Trump said.

In a recent interview with Phil McGraw, the GOP nominee had also reflected on his faith and on God’s intervening hand of protection.

“Is there a reason you think you were spared?” McGraw asked the former president in an interview recorded in Las Vegas.

“I mean, the only thing I can think is that God loves our country,” Trump responded. “And he thinks we’re going to bring our country back. He wants to bring it back.”

“How can you say it’s luck when it’s, you know, 20 million to one?” he wondered.

“You believe God’s hand was in this that day?” McGraw asked.

“I believe so, yeah, I do,” Trump answered.

“And you talk about the country; you believe you have more to do,” McGraw said. “You weren’t done. You were spared for a reason.”

“Well,” Trump replied, “God believes that.”
