Disgraced and disbarred ex-lawyer Michael Cohen has parlayed his animosity for former President Donald J. Trump into a nice living with book deals and regular appearances on network and cable television but he may soon be forced to put his money where his mouth is after the embattled 2024 GOP frontrunner sued him for $500 million.
On Wednesday, Trump filed a federal lawsuit against his former lawyer, alleging that Cohen violated their attorney-client relationship and breached his fiduciary duties, in particular, a confidentiality agreement, by “spreading falsehoods” about the nation’s 45th president that was “likely to be embarrassing or detrimental, and partook in other misconduct,”
The suit describes Cohen’s “myriad of public statements, including the publication of two books, a podcast series, and innumerable mainstream media appearances,” despite “cease and desist” orders which have allegedly been ignored.
According to the 32-page document which was filed in the Southern District of Florida, “Defendant has engaged in such wrongful conduct over a period of time and, despite being demanded in writing to cease and desist such unacceptable actions, has instead in recent months increased the frequency and hostility of the illicit acts toward Plaintiff.”

“[Cohen’s] improper, self-serving, and malicious statements about his former client, his family members, and his business constitute repeated and substantial violations of his continuing fiduciary obligations as an attorney,” according to the lawsuit, “[Cohen] chose to capitalize on his confidential relationship with [Trump] to pursue financial gain and repair a reputation shattered by his repeated misrepresentations and deceptive acts, fueled by his animus toward [Trump] and his family members.”
The lawsuit against Cohen “has nothing to do with the Manhattan DA’s lawless and fact-less case and is a totally separate matter,” an unnamed source “close to Trump’s legal team” told Fox News.
Cohen is but one of the sordid cast of characters who have bubbled up out of the slimy morass of the Stormy Daniels saga, another disgraced attorney whose ability to spin yarns about Trump spared him the fate of Michael Avenatti who, for lack of such a powerful bargaining chip, was sentenced to 14 years in the slammer for defrauding his clients, one of them being the smut queen.
The star witness in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s malicious prosecution may be a hero of the so-called anti-Trump Resistance but his reputation as a slimy operator has been well established as a convicted felon and “serial liar,” at least according to his former legal adviser Robert Costello who testified of his lack of credibility to the New York City grand jury that would go on to indict the former president on the trumped up charges brought by the Soros-backed prosecutor in his case centering on alleged “hush money” payments to Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal who also claimed that she had sex with Trump.
Cohen’s attorney, longtime Clinton loyalist Lanny Davis reacted to the lawsuit, “Mr. Trump is once again using and abusing the judicial system as a form of harassment and intimidation against Michael Cohen,” he said in a statement.
“It appears he is terrified by his looming legal perils and is attempting to send a message to other potential witnesses who are cooperating with prosecutors against him. Mr. Cohen will not be deterred and is confident that the suit will fail based on the facts and the law,” Davis added. “Is there anyone in America, aside from a shrinking minority base of believers, who takes Mr. Trump seriously when he files these frivolous lawsuits?”
Media reports on Trump’s lawsuit were filled with quotes that were heavily biased on behalf of their hero.
“It could be an attempt to pressure Michael Cohen not to testify, but that pressure is unlikely to work,” Hofstra University’s law school professor Ellen C. Yaroshefsky said, according to the New York Times.
“This is a PR stunt, arguably one as retaliation because Michael Cohen is now the star witness in the Manhattan criminal case,” national security attorney Bradley Moss told Axios.
Axios also quoted former federal prosecutor, Gene Rossi, “The civil lawsuit against Michael Cohen is an attempt to deflect the attention from Donald Trump in a criminal case,” he said.
Meanwhile, Trump relaxed with a round of golf on Wednesday before he heads back to New York to be deposed in the civil lawsuit filed against him by Bragg’s Big Apple Democrat cohort, New York Attorney General Leticia “Peekaboo” James.

“Trump wants ‘compensatory, incidental, and punitive damages’ in an amount that would be determined at a trial and would ‘substantially exceed’ $500 million, the complaint said. He also wants any profits or compensation Cohen receives from his books, podcast or other products,” according to NBC News.
“He’s lied to the judge. He’s lied to the prosecutors. He’s lied to his employers. He’s lied to his own attorneys,” said Chris Kise, one of Trump’s lawyers quoted in the Wall Street Journal. “So at some point, someone needs to hold this serial liar accountable.”
