Verdict in Karmelo Anthony case ignites outrage and bitter debate

A decision in the trial of Karmelo Anthony preceded two arrests outside the courthouse as protesters, crying racism, clashed, asserting, “This is a war!”

Tuesday at the Collin County Courthouse in McKinney, Texas, Anthony was found guilty of the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf and sentenced to 35 years in prison. While justice was meted out within, outside the courthouse, supporters of the murderer, including some sporting the logo of the New Black Panther Party, were heard speaking in favor of the death of the victim’s twin brother, decrying the makeup of the jury and claiming “this is a racist a** country.”

Footage captured by journalist Nick Sortor featured a woman flanked by two others with New Black Panther attire shouting at the crowd and directly at those interjecting, “We gonna tell our kids the truth, that this is a racist a** country.”

“Stop that c**n a** sh*t. Not nobody wanna hear ’bout what we doin’ to each other. We’re talking about what they’re doing to us,” she was heard responding to someone.

Before her rant was through, two others stepped up behind her holding a Black American Heritage Flag aloft as she declared, “This is a war!”

Later, one of the individuals seen holding the flag was taken into custody by the Collin County Sheriff’s Department, having previously been seen harassing people outside the courthouse.

Turning Point USA contributor and reporter Savanah Hernandez added context, posting on X about the ongoing behavior throughout the trial, “Last week this guy told me I work for ‘white supremacists’ after he found out I work for Turning Point … Here he is screaming in the face of a white man in an attempt to harass and intimidate him outside of the Karmelo Anthony trial. Truly insane people.”

In another video shared by Sortor, a woman speaking with the media expressed, “Anytime a white man or a white child can go and put their hands aggressively on anybody and something like this occurs, it’s self-defense.”

“You put your hand on me and see how I respond,” she went on as a woman behind her added, “Beat your motherf*cking a**!”

The first woman then explained her only connection to the trial was that she’s also black like the Anthonys, “We’re the indigenous people of this earth.”

“That young boy, he was defending his G*ddamn self!” she insisted.

Adorned with a shirt that read “not guilty” beside others wearing “Free Karmelo” attire, a woman shared her belief that the victim’s twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, should have also been killed. “They both should’ve been dead!”

While reactions continued on social media, further disruption was stymied as Collin County Sheriff’s Office detailed that the parking lot was closed at 8:45 Tuesday evening per order of the court, but that media were exempt from the order.
