Abbott teases 100 percent tariff on New Yorkers fleeing Mamdani for Texas

As New York City teeters on the edge of electing Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, states like Texas and Florida are preparing for the inevitable flood of newcomers.

Normal, level-headed Americans have already headed for the Republican-led states from places like California, where insane tax rates and poor leadership have resulted in sky-high costs of living and a thriving homeless population. With the possibility of a far-left candidate leading one of the largest cities in the United States looming overhead, Texas Governor Greg Abbott jokingly proposed a “tariff” on those thinking about moving to his state for refuge.

Look:

“After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC,” he wrote in an X post.

This comes after a recent poll indicates that almost a million New Yorkers are contemplating leaving the state should Mamdani win the mayoral race. A report from The Daily Mail, reveals that “at least 765,000 citizens would be one of the biggest mass exoduses in American history,” according to a poll conducted by JL Partners for the outlet. Additionally, it noted that “9 percent of New Yorkers would ‘definitely’ leave the city, which currently has a population of 8.5 million.”

To make matters worse, polling also found a further 25 percent, or 2.12 million, would ‘consider’ going.

The poll revealed widespread alarm at the prospect of Mamdani taking over City Hall and highlighted the colossal economic impact a victory for the 34-year-old state assemblyman could have for America.

If anywhere near that number left New York it would crater the city’s economy and send shockwaves across the rest of the country.

It’s no surprise people are formulating exit plans after Mamdani threatened to institute extreme leftist policies like taxing “richer and whiter neighborhoods” by pushing “assessment percentages down for everyone.” While it’s unlikely he would ever be able to enact such a plan without legal challenges, just the threat of being targeted is enough to push voters out of the state.

“Racial discrimination is illegal in the United States – period. Full stop! The illegal discriminatory scheme described by Mamdani would violate federal constitutional and statutory norms, and might even violate New York law,” said Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon, who is ready to pounce should the socialist attempt to make good on his threats.
