To many, the upcoming Republican primary is more of a formality for former President Donald Trump leaving the debate open over who his running mate ought to be, and one outlet believes they’ve got a bead on which conservative woman is most likely to appear on the ticket.
Unlike Democrats with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the GOP isn’t interested in a coronation and challengers to Trump will be encouraged to help bring out the president’s A-game as he makes his third bid for the White House. In the meantime, as the frontrunner speculation abounds over whom he’ll ask to run as vice president, Axios reported which female firebrand is “a model” running mate.
With many strong candidates to choose from like Gov. Kristi Noem (SD), who has placed her record up against Gov. Ron DeSantis (FL), and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, whose own bid for the nomination could be considered an audition to be second in command, insiders told the outlet former news anchor and 2022 Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake is currently the favorite.
“Former President Trump is strongly considering picking a female running mate — and sees Kari Lake as a model for his vice-presidential pick,” Axios wrote, “according to people who discussed the topic with him.”
The “scoop” noted “she’s willing to defend him vociferously, no matter the issue or controversy,” but considered her to come with the “downside” of “angling for president from the day she entered the White House.”
The outlet went on to point out other top contenders like Noem and Haley alongside newly elected Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (AR) who served for a time as Trump’s White House press secretary and has come out swinging in the culture war for her state.
Axios’ report coincided with the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) which released its straw poll results Saturday ahead of Trump’s address to attendees. The former president took the top spot handily for the favored 2024 candidate, drawing 62 percent of the vote over his next nearest competitor, the yet-to-announce DeSantis who garnered 20 percent of the more than 2,000 respondents.
Alongside Trump’s win, out of a crowded field of 28 potential candidates, Lake took a decisive victory of her own as the favored pick for vice president, albeit with competition close behind. With 20 percent of the total vote, Lake edged out DeSantis and Haley with 14 and 10 percent of the vote respectively, as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, himself an announced candidate for president, rounded out the top five with six percent of the vote each.
In response to her straw poll victory, Lake’s communication team demonstrated precisely why she is a favored pick to run alongside Trump as they drew attention to the election challenge still ongoing in Arizona and wrote, “We’re flattered, but unfortunately our legal team says the Constitution won’t allow for her to serve as Governor and VP at the same time.”
