Be it shenanigans or a simple slip-up, an investigation is underway in Georgia to uncover how tallies impacting the outcome of a race went unreported.
“That is unacceptable …”
Contrary to claims from Democrats leading up to the midterm elections, instead of cries of impropriety or interference by Republicans, social media was filled with gleeful boasting and, in some cases, threats. Amidst cries of mandate and referendum, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) announced an investigation in Seminole County after a missing memory card tipped the balance from left to right.
Ahead of election certification, routine post-election audits uncovered that nearly 400 more voters were recorded checking in at polling stations than the number of ballots cast. When the secretary’s office notified the Seminole County Board of Elections, it was determined that a memory card containing vote records hadn’t been uploaded to the system.
Once this discrepancy was discovered, the unofficial results that declared Democrat Harry James as the winner were flipped. Incumbent state Rep. Gerald Greene (R) of the 154th District went from trailing James by 58 votes to overtake the Democrat by 262 votes.
“Georgia’s election safeguards are designed to identify discrepancies, and that is exactly what these guardrails did,” expressed Raffensperger in a statement accompanying the press release. “Our office identified a significant discrepancy, alerted county officials, and uncovered a failure to properly upload election results. This oversight didn’t just affect the numbers — it changed who was leading an election. That is unacceptable, and we intend to find out exactly how it happened.”
The secretary, who is set to be succeeded by lawyer and judge Penny Brown Reynolds (D) in the coming administration of Governor-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms (D), went on to remind, “Every vote matters, and in a close election, even a relatively small number of unreported ballots can change the outcome.”
Raffensperger’s investigation aims to determine if required election procedures were followed, how the memory card was overlooked, and whether corrective measures are necessary to stave off a repeat incident. This follows a report from earlier this year wherein Fulton County, Georgia, confirmed that in 2020, when President Donald Trump contacted the secretary about the outcome of the election and set the stage for one of the myriad lawfare efforts against him, election procedures had not been followed.
When the results of the election were certified in favor of President Joe Biden, less than 12,000 votes separated him from Trump. According to the county, over 300,000 early vote ballots had not been properly certified.
Much like the outcome in Texas, results reported by the Associated Press indicated that while Republicans lost control of the executive in the Peach State, the state Senate remained in GOP majority control. Additionally, with a number of races yet to be called, it was yet to be determined which party would come out on top in the state House.
