Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) lashed out at GOP opposition to the current iteration of the president’s “big, beautiful bill” as well as his successor’s management.
“Today was a real misstep …”
As a Memorial Day target to pass President Donald Trump’s championed One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB) Act fast approaches, House Republicans continue to butt heads over crafting the massive legislation. A hiccup in forward progress from four House Budget Committee members found McCarthy lashing out at those supposedly looking “out for themselves.”
Joining WABC 770 AM’s “Cats Roundtable” with host John Catsimatidis, the former legislator who’d been ousted from his position as speaker before leaving Congress, expressed, “The stock market seems like it is moving up. Now, if Congress can start doing the things that President Trump’s doing, it would even help us more. Today was a real misstep on the Republicans’ part, in the budget side, that four of them looked out for themselves instead of moving the bill along, reconciliation.”
Likewise, he took a shot at House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and said, “What really shows is, once President Trump gets back in the country, I mean, poor President Trump is being the president and the speaker at the same time. I think we’ll get that bill through.”
After initially failing to advance out of the House Budget Committee with a vote of 16-21 on Friday, with Republican Reps. Josh Brecheen of Oklahoma, Andrew Clyde of Georgia, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, Chip Roy of Texas, and Lloyd Smucker of Pennsylvania opposing, the bill was advanced 17-16 as Brecheen, Clyde, Norman, and Roy voted “present.” Smucker’s initial “no” was said to be a procedural change as a means to ensure another vote from the committee.
Of the successful attempt, Fox News reported that Johnson “made a surprise appearance in the committee room” before the vote and that he held a private conference with the four congressmen who voted “present” after telling the press there would likely be “minor modifications” to the bill.
“I am absolutely convinced we’re going to get this in final form and pass it in accordance with our original deadline,” said the speaker.
Meanwhile, as McCarthy went on to call out how, “if they don’t get the job done, your taxes go up,” Roy fleshed out the sticking points that House Freedom Caucus members were attempting to resolve before the bill made its way to the House floor.
“Tonight, after a great deal of work and engagement over the weekend, the Budget Committee advanced a reconciliation bill that lays the foundation for much needed tax relief, border security, and important spending reductions and reforms. Importantly the bill now will move Medicaid work requirements forward and reduces the availability of future subsidies under the green new scam,” wrote the Texas lawmaker on X.
“But, the bill does not meet the moment — leaving almost half of the green new scam subsidies continuing. More, it fails to end the Medicaid money laundering scam and perverse funding structure that provides seven times more federal dollars for each dollar of state spending for the able-bodied relative to the vulnerable,” he went on before adding, “This all ultimately increases the likelihood of continuing deficits and non-Obamacare-expansion states like Texas expanding in the future. We can and must do better before we pass the final product.”

Both Roy and Norman also sit on the House Rules Committee, where the bill is set to be considered before a passing vote would bring it before the entirety of the lower chamber.
Without addressing the minutia of the sausage making to see his 2017 tax cuts extended along with entitlement reforms, Trump weighed in briefly on the advancement of the OBBB Act and wrote on Truth Social, “CONGRATULATIONS REPUBLICANS!!! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
