Bill Maher: ‘It’s at least worth asking’ why Putin didn’t invade under Trump if he was ‘that supportive’

Liberal comedian Bill Maher sought on the latest episode of his HBO show to address the elephant in the room, namely why Russian President Vladimir Putin had waited til former President Donald Trump’s exit to invade Ukraine.

He addressed this point while complaining about left-wingers and right-wingers who’ve been using Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to tout their favorite pet talking points.

For instance, he noted that Republicans have responded to the invasion by blaming current President Joe Biden for being “the worst president ever,” and Democrats have likewise responded by blaming former President Donald Trump for being “the worst president ever.”

As an example, he then quoted directly from a speech that Biden delivered earlier this month at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. In the speech, the president tried to blame Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine on Trump.

“Vladimir Putin was counting on being able to split up the United States. Look, how would you feel if you saw crowds storm and break down the doors of the British Parliament, kill five cops, injure 145 — or the German Bundestag or the Italian Parliament? I think you’d wonder,” he said.

This remark left Maher’s scratching his head in bewilderment.

“I’m not sure I can follow Biden’s logic all the way when he dragged Jan. 6th into this. … [I]f Putin thought Trump was really that supportive of him, why didn’t he invade when Trump was in office? It’s at least worth asking that question if you’re not locked into one intransigent thought,” he said.

And there it was.

Granted, he wasn’t the first person to ask this question, nor will he likely be the last:

The answer, Trump himself has suggested, is because he’d exuded strength, whereas Biden perpetually exudes weakness. In fact, the 45th president was just recently overheard explaining this in a phone call to PGA golfer John Daly.

During the call, the former president specifically claimed that Putin would have never made such a move during his administration because of the fear factor.

“I say, ‘Vladimir, if you do it, we’re hitting Moscow.’ I said, ‘We’re gonna hit Moscow.’ … He never did it during my time, John, you know We’re all talking about it, he didn’t do this during the last four years because he knew he couldn’t,” Trump said.

Continuing his remarks Friday on HBO’s “Real Time,” Maher then proceeded to roast a large number of public figures, including the former president, for making Russia’s invasion of Ukraine all about their pet cause.

“Don’t make World War III all about you. Watching the reactions to war in Ukraine these past few weeks, it’s become obvious that America in this age suffers acutely from a particular disease of the mind, which is everything proves what we already believed, and everything goes back to the thing we already hate,” he said.

“Now, one guy we know who’s locked into one thought is Donald Trump, who, when asked what went wrong with Ukraine, said, well, what went wrong was a rigged election. Kanye [West] thinks less about Pete Davidson than Trump thinks about the rigged election.”

Rapper Kanye West is currently extremely frustrated that his estranged wife is dating Davidson.

The liberal comedian also took a shot at Trump’s family.

“His son is obsessed with Biden’s son. Who knows why? Hunter Biden is a ne’er-do-well, entitled son of privilege with a party-boy past, and Don Jr. … never mind,” he said.

“But for whatever reason, Don Jr. seems obsessed with Hunter, so when Ukraine happened, Don tweeted ‘will it ultimately be Hunter’s lucrative and shady ass business dealings in Ukraine that gets us into a war with Russia? Uh, let me feel that one for you mini mook … no!”
