Dem operative David Brock seeks to ‘shame,’ disbar Trump election lawyers in ‘dark money’ campaign

David Brock, founder of Media Matters for America and the man whom Time Magazine called “one of the most influential political operatives in the Democratic party,” has launched a “dark money” group aimed at destroying the careers and maligning the characters of more than 100 lawyers involved in post-election lawsuits on behalf of former President Donald Trump.

According to Axios and “people involved with the effort”: “A dark money group with ties to Democratic Party heavyweights will spend millions this year to expose and try to disbar more than 100 lawyers who worked on Donald Trump’s post-election lawsuits.”

The effort, known as the 65 Project — named for the number of lawsuits that “sought to invalidate the 2020 results” — “plans to begin filing complaints this week and will air ads in battlegrounds states.”

It was created by former senior Clinton administration official and Democratic consultant, Melissa Moss.

Its ultimate aim is “to deter right-wing legal talent from signing on to any future GOP efforts to overturn elections — including the midterms or 2024,” and it intends on accomplishing this goal by publicly smearing, shaming, and disbarring any lawyer who dared to do their jobs for someone David Brock and his ilk doesn’t like.

The idea, according to Brock, is to “not only bring the grievances in the bar complaints, but shame them and make them toxic in their communities and in their firms.”

And apparently, the group has the money to do it. Operating through an already established nonprofit called Law Works, the 65 Project is prepared to spend around $2.5 million in its first year alone.

Ads will air in contested battleground states, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and will target 111 lawyers in 26 states from both large national firms and small, regional ones.

Additionally, the 65 Project vows to “push the [American Bar Association] and every state bar association to codify rules barring certain election challenges and adopt model language stating that ‘fraudulent and malicious lawsuits to overturn legitimate election results violate the ethical duties lawyers must abide by.'”

In other words, a rabidly partisan political operative is leading a charge to shut down legal challenges to the most important Constitutionally guaranteed power and privilege granted to the American people: free and fair elections.

Challenge whatever outcome you are told is “official” — even if it appears clear to half of the nation that shenanigans were in play — and you and anyone who helps you to make your case in a court of law will wind up with a metaphorical horse’s head bleeding all over their new MyPillow.

According to Axios, the 65 Project has arranged their targets into three categories:

  • Trump’s legal inner circle, including lawyers such as campaign hands Jenna Ellis and Boris Epshteyn and post-election lawyers like Sidney Powell and Joe DiGenova.
  • Lawyers who signed on as “alternate electors,” who planned to submit their names to the Electoral College in lieu of legitimate elector slates if Trump-aligned legal challenges succeeded.
  • Licensed attorneys who participated in or were present at the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Brock is perfectly aware of the fact that lawyers at smaller firms could face complete ruin at his hands, and that seems to be the point.

“I think the littler fish are probably more vulnerable to what we’re doing,” he said. “You’re threatening their livelihood. And, you know, they’ve got reputations in their local communities.”

In a lengthy Twitter thread posted Monday, the 65 Project makes their position bone-chillingly clear: “We’ve come together to hold accountable the Big Lie Lawyers behind fraudulent lawsuits intended to overturn election results and those that otherwise helped fuel insurrection.”

“We will hold accountable any attorney who violated their oath in abetting the conspiracy and insurrection — inside or outside the courtroom, including Members of Congress, fake electors, key conspirators, and insurrectionists,” the group continued. “We will pursue every legal recourse — including sanctions and disbarment, to ensure [attorneys] cannot act with impunity to abuse the legal process to overturn the legitimate elections in the future.”

According to the thread, the 65 Project’s advisory board includes former Senator Tom Daschle, former Chief Justice of the Utah Supreme Court Christine Durham, former American Bar Association President Roberta Cooper Ramo, Legal Ethicist Renee Knake Jefferson, and former Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Paul Rosenzweig.

In brutally bashing their opponents now, the 65 Project’s message as the midterms approach, is clear: If you have any thoughts of questioning any results in November, think again.

Your ability to provide for your family, the career you’ve worked hard to establish, and your reputation as a human being depends upon it.
