Senate Democrats believe prolonging a government shutdown is a winning strategy after Tuesday’s elections.
At least one anonymous Democrat senator reportedly argued that any concessions with Republicans to reopen the government should be off the table after radical Dems swept elections in Virginia, California, and New York.
“It would be hugely deflating. When your strategy — when something is working, you don’t stop,” the senator said, according to The Hill. The newly revived Democrat reportedly acknowledged that shutdowns are “horrible” but argued that “the solution is not to pacify the other side.”
House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries was also energized by the election, claiming it shows that “the American people are fed up with the high costs of living” and “attacks on health care.”
Democrat Senate Leader Chuck Schumer took it a step further, saying the elections prove Americans blame Republicans for the shutdown.
“Democrats won overwhelmingly” and “by more than anyone thought,” Schumer said on the Senate floor on Wednesday.
“Last night, [Trump] said that the shutdown is a negative factor for the Republicans. When addressing why he had lost, this is what Trump said: ‘The shutdown was a big factor, negative for the Republicans,’” Schumer said Wednesday.
“The president is right: Americans realize Republicans are responsible for this awful shutdown, now the longest officially in history,” Schumer said.
Interestingly enough, Schumer and Jeffries demanded a meeting with Republicans, claiming to want to end the shutdown immediately after election night, and some found the timing highly suspicious:
BREAKING: Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries are DEMANDING an IMMEDIATE meeting with President Trump and GOP leaders to end the government shutdown.
Strange… right after election night.
Makes you wonder. pic.twitter.com/Xtz94pqQL6

Texas Rep. Keith Self encouraged President Trump to record any such meeting, should it happen.
I encourage @realDonaldTrump to call the bluff of Leaders Jeffries and Schumer to meet with them “anytime and anyplace.” Make it public, with cameras rolling, so the attempted fleecing of the American people by these two self-serving despots—and their comrades—is on display for… https://t.co/2LLworiVq9

Self’s idea to call the Democrats’ “bluff” was well-received by X users:
I agree @POTUS needs to meet with them and televise it so that the American people/taxpayers know what their demands are to open the government.
The CR was to fund only seven weeks, we are currently in the sixth week!
Let that sink in!

This is the exact same idea I thought of when I read this note. I would love to see the exchange. How far can they take their gaslighting with the public being the witnesses?

I want reporters present when @POTUS asks @LeaderJohnThune to terminate the filibuster and tells President Trump no. I want the American people to know who the real traitors are in the GOP. We will expose you all.

This is a good idea @RepKeithSelf
I can’t wait to see Trump’s response to their proposal. pic.twitter.com/lrBNryxXG6— Randy Cooper (@randycooper) November 6, 2025
