DHS chief Kristi Noem announces new TSA feature catering to families and members of military

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is announcing the rollout of new TSA lanes.

Air travel is, even at its best, inconvenient and time-consuming. If you are traveling with children, the long lines look more like an instrument of torture rather than a safety check that keeps flyers safe.

On Thursday, Noem announced that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will be adding news lanes that should help ease the pressure across the board. These lanes will cater to service members and “Families on the Fly,” which will also give families a $15 discount on TSA pre-check enrollment. The program has already been tested at an Orlando, Florida airport which sees a large number of families due to being the home of Disney World.

“This means that when families come into our airports and enter our TSA security checkpoints, they will have dedicated lanes specific for families. They’ll be expanded areas that will give them the benefit of recognizing that they have children with them, and will help make sure that we have the ability to take care of them and their families as they go through this expedited process with their kiddos,” the secretary said.

Likewise, the “Honor Lane” seeks to expedite security for service members and their families and has already been rolled out in Nashville, Tennessee. These new lanes will be available at 11 airports and are aiming to expand to additional locations, specifically near military bases. Gold Star families will also receive free TSA pre-check enrollment.

“These tokens of gratitude are just a small amount of what we can do in this country to honor those who serve in our military, but also them and their families, and recognize their sacrifice,” Noem added.
