Not long after word circulated that the acclaimed director of films like “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “The Princess Bride,” and his wife, Michele Singer, had been found dead, it became known that their son, Nick Reiner, was a person of interest. Now, as pictures of the arrest of the 32-year-old facing murder charges are released by the LAPD, multiple reports speak of alleged disruptive behavior at comedian Conan O’Brien’s party on Saturday.
The images showed Reiner on the ground as he was handcuffed, surrounded by law enforcement officials who took him into custody before he was ultimately booked for the alleged murder of his parents.

NBC News detailed how investigators believe the suspect had used public transportation following the murders and, according to a report from TMZ, he had checked into The Pierside Santa Monica early Sunday morning, where eyewitnesses described him as “tweaked out.”
The report also indicated that staff found blood on the bed and that the shower was “full of blood.” The window was said to have been covered with bed sheets.
As for the event leading up to the murders, the outlet credited Reiner family sources for indicating that the father and son had a “very loud argument” as they attended Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday.
TMZ explained, “Our family sources add … Michele had been anguishing to friends over the last few months that she and Rob were at their wits’ end over Nick’s mental illness and alleged substance abuse issues, and did not know what to do with their son Nick … saying, ‘We’ve tried everything.'”
Similarly, a source told People, “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous,” before he ultimately left the party in the wake of the argument.
Apparently Nick Reiner attended an “A List” holiday party with Reiner and Michele Saturday night at Conan O’ Brien’s house and got into a ‘very loud argument’ with his parents before they left.

Reiner’s struggle with drug addiction was public knowledge, and sources told the New York Post that while he was “supposedly off drugs,” after at least 17 times in rehabilitation since he was 15 years old, there was talk he was “not so much off them,” according to a neighbor.
“They had an argument at Conan’s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people that they’re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating,” the lifelong family friend explained to the newspaper.
Another family friend said, “I know [the parents] wanted him to get help, go to rehab, but he wanted to get help while at home — he did not want to get treatment at a facility.”
As the alleged murderer was being held on a $4 million bond, reactions continued to pour in about the tragedy and the seriousness of mental health issues.
I’ve been truly saddened by this tragic news. I had no idea about his son until today. I cannot imagine the anguish and pain this family suffered for years because of his drug addiction and/or mental health issues. It can be hell on earth. Fame and fortune does not buy happiness…

Drugs and mental illness are the biggest problem we’re facing in America. This is so horribly tragic. I don’t give a crap about Rob Reiner’s politics right now. Life is more important. We gotta start making some changes in society b/c people have lost self-control.

We need insane asylums. They should have been able to put him in a safe asylum where professionals could deal with him 24/7. For both his own safety and theirs. From a policy perspective, that’s the tragedy here.
