After triggering critics over his purge of U.S. government waste, Elon Musk confirmed he has had security clearance “for a long time.”
In comments on X Thursday, the billionaire and head of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) also criticized the amount of information the government labels “classified.”
“I’ve had a top-secret clearance for many years and have clearances that themselves are classified,” Musk wrote. “That said, FAR too much information is made ‘classified’. If something is easily found online or patently obvious, it should NOT be classified. This impedes effective communication within the government.”

In addition to his suggestion to make bureaucracy more efficient, Musk included a clip from the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
U.S. Rep. Mark Green blasted the agency for being an “unapologetic front for a far-left agenda” and also defended Musk against the left’s hysteria and the “crocodile tears” from Democrats.
“I spent the last two years exposing the Biden administration’s sabotage of our border and the policies that kept America safe. I saw firsthand their willful refusal to protect this country. Under the guise of foreign aid, USAID has been an unapologetic front for a far-left agenda,” the Tennessee Republican said during his remarks.
“It has become self-evident there weren’t a handful of foolish policies but rather a coordinated strategy of radical idiotic and often anti-American priorities,” he continued, adding that “not a single Democrat I’ve heard has expressed dismay at the many examples of crazy wasteful spending. I don’t understand the objection to a deep dive in how we spend our money.”
Green, a combat veteran, went on to torch Democrats and their hypocrisy before dropping a reality check on Musk’s security clearance.
“Elon Musk and the team that is working does not have access to personal data. They don’t have access to your social security number – that is a lie,” he said.
“Elon Musk does have a security clearance, he has a top-secret security clearance, by God he makes the rockets for NASA!” Green exclaimed. “But the suggestion that he somehow can’t be trusted to dig into how we’re spending our money is nothing but a smokescreen to hide the corruption and the wasteful spending that has occurred there!”
