Florida Dem ripped for touting ‘MAJOR victory’ after Soros-backed group buys 18 Spanish radio stations

A Florida Democrat may have been a little too liberal in the application of the term “we” as he touted the purchase of “18 major Spanish-language stations.”

U.S. Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla., took to Twitter to boast about a “MAJOR victory” after an investment group led by George “Spooky Dude” Soros backed the acquisition of 18 Univision radio stations in a $60 million all-cash deal in the runup to the midterms.

“We had MAJOR victory against right wing Spanish radio disinformation efforts this week. Latino Media Network buys 18 major Spanish-language stations from TelevisaUnivision. It includes Miami’s Radio Mambí, & NY, CA, IL, TX, & NV stations,” Soto tweeted, adding the hashtag #VerdadGana! — which translates roughly to “truth wins.”

Latino Media Network (LMN) signed a “definitive agreement” to purchase the AM and FM stations, which are located in “10 of the country’s largest Latino markets, including Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, and Las Vegas,” WLRN. reported.

Stephanie Valencia, who served under former President Barack Obama as a Latino outreach director, is at the helm of LMN, along with Jess Morales Rocketto, a Democratic activist.

And while Soto’s tweet effectively confirms the political nature of the purchase in a state that has a large Hispanic population that appears to be trending more and more Republican with every passing day, there seems to be more here than meets the eye.

Social media user Giancarlo Sopo responded to Soto to add a little perspective.

“You guys just dropped $60 million on 17 dying radio stations, many in solidly blue areas, and an AM Spanish station in Miami whose ratings have declined by 54% since 2008. Good job, Darren!” he tweeted.

Then again, the fact that many of the stations are purportedly in “solidly blue areas” may suggest that Democrats feel they must make an effort to keep Hispanics on the liberal reservation.

As for Soto’s reference to “right wing disinformation,” that can be interpreted as anything that counters the political narrative on the left. Truth was the first casualty in their war to control information.
