Justice Clarence Thomas hospitalized; left feeling giddy over the news

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

After undergoing testing, the 73-year-old justice was diagnosed with an infection and is resting comfortably while his symptoms “are abating,” according to a statement released by the high court. Thomas has been vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19.

“His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two,” Supreme Court spokesperson Patricia McCabe said in the release. “Justice Thomas will participate in the consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present on the basis of the briefs, transcripts and audio of the oral arguments.”

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in four cases this week. With a 6-3 conservative majority — Chief Justice John Roberts notwithstanding — should Thomas not be able to participate, the balance of the Supreme Court would not be impacted.

The Senate Judiciary Committee begins hearings Monday in the nomination of liberal federal appeals Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who President Biden named to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer. As the first black woman to be nominated to the court, Jackson is expected to be seated with little opposition.

As for the reporting on Thomas being hospitalized, the left appeared to be downright giddy over the news… here’s a quick sampling of some of the responses from Twitter:

One social media user summed the sad reaction up properly, tweeting: “After reading some of these comment, it’s safe to say my faith in humanity is now completely dead. How somebody could take such joy in the suffering of their fellow human is positively baffling.”
