Las Vegas teens arrested after running down, killing former police chief on bike were on 2-hr crime spree

The two Las Vegas teens who killed an elderly white bicyclist were reportedly in the middle of a 2-hour crime spree at the time.

As previously reported, teens Jesus Ayala, 18, and Jzamir Keys, 16, filmed themselves intentionally plowing into and killing a retired police chief as he was riding his bicycle. Ayala was reportedly driving while Keys was recording and hyping him on.

They killed the retired police chief, Andreas Probst, while in a stolen car.

“About a half-hour before Probst’s murder, the teenagers allegedly attempted to hit another bike,” according to local station KLAS.

Their crime spree continued after they hit Probst, though they first abandoned the damaged car in a ditch reportedly less than 10 minutes from the crash site.

“In the hours after Probst’s death, the teenagers allegedly stole two more cars. … About an hour after allegedly hitting and killing Probst, the teenagers took the two stolen cars and crashed them into each other near a shopping plaza at Lake Mead and Rainbow Boulevards,” according to KLAS.

“The teenagers then allegedly broke into a garage where they took several items, and returned to the area where Probst was hit and killed in one of the two-crashed stolen cars,” KLAS reported Thursday.

Both teens now face a flurry of charges.

Ayala, the driver, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, battery with the use of a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an accident, larceny, and burglary. Keys meanwhile faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and battery.

KLAS notes that Ayala for his part has an extensive juvenile criminal record. Keys, on the other hand, appears to be a product of America’s welfare system and, frankly, bad mothering.

“[H]e was in the child welfare system at 8 years old. His mother was charged with five counts of child abuse in 2016, according to court documents. Police said they found her five children ages two to nine years old home alone without access to food, a knife left on a kitchen counter, and the house in poor condition,” according to KLAS.

“Neighbors reported witnessing the children left alone for extended periods of time. The mother said that she could not find childcare while she worked. She pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor child abuse. She later withdrew her plea after she successfully completed terms of probation and received a conviction for misdemeanor disorderly conduct.”

Speaking of his mother, she’s suggested that her son is innocent.

“My son’s side of the story will be told, ‘the truth,’ not the inaccuracies the media will try to portray,” she told KLAS.

It’s not clear what “truth” may be given as Keys is seen on video encouraging Ayala to drive into and potentially kill the aforementioned police chief.

Ayala’s mom responded differently.

“I don’t know why he did this. I don’t know if God can forgive this,” she told reporters.

It’s not just Keys’ mother who’s stirred controversy. So has Probst’s daughter. During a press conference Wednesday, she seemed more concerned about not appearing racist than she did about expressing outrage over her father’s unnecessary, cruel death.

“We are devastated by the senseless murder of Andy. Andy’s life was robbed by two individuals who did not believe that the lives of others matter. We believe that Andy’s murder is the direct result of society’s decayed family values and the strong effect that social media has on our youth,” she said.

“We as a family in no way feel that Andy’s murder was based on race or profession. It was a random act of violence. We ask you to not politicize or use Andy’s murder to fuel political agendas or create cultural wars,” she added.

Both Ayala and Keys reportedly appeared in court for the first time on Thursday.

Probst’s death, which occurred on Aug. 14th, was reportedly initially classified as a hit-and-run. Then in late August, a fellow student shared the footage of the murder with a school resource officer, who in turn then alerted the police.

Both are set to be tried as adults.
