Levin demands answers after Trump-Netanyahu leak raises eyebrows

Conservative commentator Mark Levin snapped like a twig Monday after a phone call between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was publicly leaked to the media.

In the Monday phone call, Trump tore into Netanyahu for ruining the ceasefire that the president has been trying to negotiate with Iran. Earlier in the day, Iran threatened to end negotiations after Israel unilaterally decided to strike southern Lebanon with drones. This enraged Trump.

“President Trump lashed out at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s escalation in Lebanon in an expletive-laden call on Monday,” Axios reported, citing several unnamed sources. “On the call, Trump called Netanyahu ‘crazy’ and accused him of ingratitude. He also put the brakes on Israel’s plan to strike Beirut.”

Trump accused Netanyahu of ingratitude based on his belief that the Israeli PM would be in prison right now if it weren’t for him. Recall that the authorities in Israel have been trying to prosecute and imprison Netanyahu on allegedly trumped-up charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust.

“You’re f–king crazy. You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your ass. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this. What the f-ck are you doing?” Trump allegedly said, according to Axios’ sources.

After word of the call was leaked, Levin, a staunch pro-Israel advocate, snapped like a twig, calling the leak “a violation of federal law” and alleging that the leak had inadvertently “provided support to the Iranian regime and its Hezbollah proxy.”

An apoplectic Levin also called for an FBI investigation into the leak.

“Whoever leaked that story to Barack Ravid at Axios did a grave disservice to our country, to our president, to Israel, and to Israel’s prime minister,” he wrote. “The Iranian regime will benefit from that leak, viewing us as weak and desperate for a deal — even coming to Hezbollah’s defense.”

“The Israeli people will also be furious.  The missiles are aimed at them, not Washington. And for 100 other reasons, what was thought to be a devastating political hit on Netanyahu by the leakers about a private call between heads of state has done much damage to us and our military and our diplomatic strategy,” he added.

His emotional tweet prompted pushback from those who felt like he was trying to cover up the obvious truth, which is that the president is indeed frustrated with Netanyahu and Israel for not only getting the U.S. in this mess but for exacerbating it with unnecessary attacks on Lebanon.

This controversy comes amid polls showing President Trump boasting a precariously low job approval rating.
