Nancy Mace sends strong, urgent warning to GOP: Stop ‘burying heads in the sand’ on abortion

U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) previewed how Republicans could once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as she pushed for a pivot on abortion and gun control while party members have allegedly been burying their “heads in the sand.”

Thanks to the 2022 Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the power to legislate on abortion was returned to the states with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” the self-described “pro-life” congresswoman did not share conservative enthusiasm for states legislating protections for the unborn as she pushed favor to appeal to independents.

“There are a lot of things that we can do to protect life and not alienate the independent voter,” she told host Shannon Bream, including touting greater access to OB/GYNs in rural areas, adoption and birth control. Those suggestions came after it was pointed out the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America group had criticized Mace whom they said had “undermined thoughtful strategy of pro-life members of Congress who are working to push back against the extremism of pro-abortion members of Congress.”

Conflating her success in a purple district with the nation at large, the South Carolina lawmaker laid out her true concern was in earning legislative victories, but merely in maintaining office as she argued, “What I saw last year in the midterm election, I saw us lose seats we should have won.”

“Women are watching. But instead, it seems like and it feels like we’re burying our heads in the sand,” Mace continued. “We’re afraid of the issue because we’re afraid of our base.”

She had admitted that her notion of being “pro-life” included terminating the life of an unborn child up to 20 weeks, a threshold well above what the majority of Americans find acceptable, according to polling done by Gallup that Bream presented to her on air.

“We need to find a middle ground on this issue and I have a great pro-life voting record, but some of the stances we’ve taken, especially when it comes to rape and incest, protecting the life of a mother, it’s so extreme, the middle — the independent voters, right of center, left of center — they cannot support us,” the congresswoman contended.

Meanwhile, in the traditional swing state of Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) chalked up another victory Thursday when he signed the Heartbeat Protection Act into law, banning abortions around the six-week mark when a heartbeat can first be detected.

“While other states like California and New York have legalized infanticide up until birth, Governor DeSantis has enacted historic measures to defend the dignity of human life and transform Florida into a pro-family state,” a statement from his office read.

To Mace’s point on doing more, the statement continued, “In 2022, Governor DeSantis signed groundbreaking legislation to encourage responsible and involved fatherhood in Florida through educational programs, mentorship programs, and one-on-one support. Also in 2022, Governor DeSantis signed SB 7034, which expands support for foster parents and opportunities for foster children. In 2021, Governor DeSantis signed SB 2518, which helps reduce maternal mortality rates by extending postpartum eligibility for Medicaid from 60 days to 12 months post-delivery.”

With those laws enacted, America’s Governor went on to win re-election by nearly 20 points and continues to poll well with independent voters on prospective lists for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Still, Mace insisted on projecting her own moderate views on her Republican identity and took a similar tact in addressing violence committed with firearms.

“Republicans can no longer be silent on this issue, and it’s not about the Second Amendment,” she told Bream, sounding like the RINOs that had worked toward funding red flag laws in 2022. “There are plenty of things that we can be doing besides offering prayers in silence.”
