Newsom can’t resist jabbing Florida, Texas even as National Guard needed to combat fentanyl in San Fran

After years of progressive policies that have led to sanctuary status for those flowing through the open U.S.  border to the south, homeless encampments on city streets, and drug dealers to run free, California Governor Gavin Newsom has finally decided to call in the National Guard and California Highway Patrol in a decidedly unprogressive bid to rid San Francisco of its devastating fentanyl problem.

On Friday, Newsom’s office announced “an agreement between the California Highway Patrol (CHP), California National Guard (CalGuard), San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office (SFDA) to assist the city in its ongoing efforts to address the fentanyl crisis.”

“This agreement will lead to the formation of a new collaborative operation between all four agencies focused on dismantling fentanyl trafficking and disrupting the supply of the deadly drug in the city by holding the operators of large-scale drug trafficking operations accountable,” according to the press release.

Sure, having to deploy the National Guard — known as “CalGuard” in the Golden State — may give you the impression that California has devolved into third-world status, but according to Newsom, who just can’t seem to help himself from taking swipes at red states, it’s still better than Florida or Texas.

“Two truths can co-exist at the same time: San Francisco’s violent crime rate is below comparably sized cities like Jacksonville [Florida] and Fort Worth [Texas] — and there is also more we must do to address public safety concerns, especially the fentanyl crisis,” Newsom said in the statement.

His finger-waggling “whataboutism” comes as San Francisco officials were forced to raise the pay for police officers by 10%, at the cost of $166.5 million over three years to try and combat a shortfall of 562 cops amid a surge in crime.

As BizPac Review has reported, concerns for safety as thugs run amock in the city have led to upscale, trendy businesses closing up shop and moving out.

The city’s ravaged Tenderloin area is ground zero for the region’s drug-induced destruction, which saw a 40% surge in fatal overdoses from January through March, according to Fox News Digital.

The problem got so out of hand that, in 2021, Mayor London Breed declared a state of emergency in the area.

So-called “safe sleeping” homeless sites were set up to try and remove tents from the city’s public streets during the COVID-19 pandemic, but those proved to be a “living hell.”

In March, San Francisco officials admitted they found a stillborn baby abandoned in a port-a-potty at one of the city-sanctioned safe-sleeping homeless encampments.

On Thursday, Newsom took a very brisk walk through the Tenderloin during an unannounced visit and avoided answering questions from those who live among the chaos.

In the Friday statement, Newsom said, “We’re taking action. Through this new collaborative partnership, we are providing more law enforcement resources and personnel to crack down on crime linked to the fentanyl crisis, holding the poison peddlers accountable, and increasing law enforcement presence to improve public safety and public confidence in San Francisco.”

Mayor Breed praised the governor for his “leadership.”

“I want to thank Governor Newsom for this critical support to help break up the open-air drug dealing happening in our city,” Breed said in the press release. “Our Police Department and District Attorney have been partnering to tackle this issue and increase enforcement, but our local agencies can use more support. With the Governor’s leadership and clear direction, our state enforcement agencies can partner with us to make a difference for our residents, businesses, and workers who are living with the impacts every day.”

On Twitter, many see Newsom’s sudden determination to handle an obvious problem that has been getting worse for years as an attempt to look like he belongs in the White House.

“He’s trying to look Presidential,” one user stated. “This should have been done YEARS ago! There’s more to do in SF and ALL of CA! He’s a joke! It’s their POLICIES!”
