Sen. Mitch McConnell’s staff reportedly expects the 84-year-old congressman to return to work next week.
Aging lawmakers are in the spotlight as McConnell makes his return to Congress following an extended absence due to hospitalization and rehabilitation. According to Punchbowl News, Republicans are preparing for his return but the lawmaker’s “final plans aren’t yet clear.”
“McConnell’s final plans aren’t yet clear, but GOP leadership sources believe the former Senate Republican leader could make his return for the September work period, which begins Monday,” the outlet reported on Thursday.
Sen. Mitch McConnell’s extended absence from public view is renewing a long-running debate over the age and tenure of members of Congress, even as voters continue to reelect some of the nation’s oldest and longest-serving lawmakers.https://t.co/OXUB8JjIMb

The prolonged absence and lack of any clear answers surrounding McConnell’s health gave birth to many conspiracy theories, with some going so far as to suggest that the lawmaker had passed away. Even a photograph wasn’t enough proof of life for those who had questions.
“McConnell has been out since mid-June when EMS radio traffic indicated he was unconscious at his D.C. home. McConnell spokesperson David Popp said in a statement at the time that the 84-year-old had been hospitalized,” Punchbowl noted. “McConnell’s staff provided no clarity on his condition or prognosis for weeks, fueling speculation about his condition. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, publicly pressed McConnell to provide more clarity or resign.”
