NYC Dem vows to bring Mexico independence ‘fight’ to Congress with her – triggers call for federal probe

A New York City socialist Democrat sparked calls for an investigation after she vowed to carry the Mexican independence “fight” into Congress if voters send her to Washington in November.

Claire Valdez, a shoo-in to win the seat vacated by retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) in New York’s 7th Congressional District, took to X this week to merge the bloody Mexican war for independence with her own socialist crusade.

“215 years ago, Mexicans fought an empire that demanded our land and our labor. And we won,” she wrote on Wednesday. “I’ll carry that fight with me to Congress as New York’s first Mexican American representative.”

“And I’m strengthened not just by Mexico’s history but its present. Last month I met comrades in Morena who are standing up to the empires and corporations that have always taken from us – and building a government for the working class,” added Valdez, who shared a picture of her meeting with her Mexican socialist friends.

The Bernie Sanders-backed, DSA-affiliated left-wing firebrand concluded her rallying cry with, “¡Viva la Independencia, Viva México!”

Valdez was also endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose candidates shocked the political world by pulling off a “socialist sweep” in June’s primaries, toppling two sitting congressmen who were backed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), establishing the Uganda-born Muslim as a “kingmaker” in his party.

But Valdez’s enthusiasm to bring the Mexican battle against imperialism into the halls of Congress may have run afoul of the Logan Act.

In a post directed to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, columnist and immigration lawyer Alicia Nieves urged the former ambassador to Mexico to launch an investigation into the Democratic congressional hopeful.

“Mr. Deputy Secretary, please investigate the details of this recent private meeting conducted by @claireforny with officials of the Mexican government. Given that she is currently a congressional nominee, not a Member of Congress, and appears to have discussed facilitating support contrary to current U.S. policy as well as describing our country an ’empire’ that has ‘stolen from us’ (referring to herself as well), I hope the administration will review whether these communications warrant investigation under the Logan Act,” she wrote.

According to Fox News, the Logan Act is “a rarely enforced 1799 law that criminalizes certain unauthorized efforts by private citizens to influence foreign governments in disputes involving the U.S.” The outlet notes that Democrats have sought to weaponize the law against President Donald J. Trump and his associates.

Valdez’s pledge may not only be against the law, but it is also consistent with her track record of spitting on America.

One potential future GOP House colleague reminded Valdez of which country she is supposed to be representing – and it isn’t the one south of the border.

“Not sure if you’re aware of this, but you will be representing the United States of America in Congress and not Mexico,” Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) wrote.

Another Republican lawmaker didn’t sugarcoat it.

“This is disqualifying. You are running for Congress in AMERICA,” Sen. Jim Banks (R-IN) wrote, a sentiment likely shared by millions outside of the deep blue district, which is poised to send the Mexico-first Democrat to Washington, D.C. in six weeks.
