NYC Mayor Adams agrees to release taxes, blames previous denial on reporter’s ‘arrogance’ in asking

New York City Mayor Eric Adams says that he will release some of his tax information, but claims that he had previously declined the request due to a reporter asking in a way that he perceived as “arrogant.”

During a Tuesday interview with Preet Bharara, a former federal prosecutor, Adams clarified his position on releasing his taxes to the public, despite it not being required by the state of New York to do so.

Adams had previously claimed he would “comply with whatever rules are in place,” before straight up saying “no” to a reporter asking if he would be releasing his taxes. He later changed his tune, pledging to release some “information” eventually, but was not clear about what he plans to release, or when.

The reversal caused some people to question what was going on, so he attempted to clear up the confusion with Bharara.

“I want to make a comment, I don’t like to leave stuff out there. Here’s what I was saying, to the arrogance of the reporter that asked the question and how he asked it,” he explained. “So when he said — watch how he asked the question, and the city …”

Bharara broke in to ask “Did I ask it arrogantly?”

“No,” Adams responded, “you were very polite.”

He went on to point out that there is no legal requirement to release his tax returns and blamed the “disrespect” of the reporter who asked him “arrogantly” for his initial “no response.

“The city gave clear rules. This is what we expect of our elected officials, to show that they are transparent. They gave us the rules! My COIB report, my filers — they told us what we have to do. I comply every year — every year! So when you arrogantly come to me, because you’re not gonna disrespect me, and ask a question like I gotta answer you yes or no, then you know what you’re gonna get? You’re gonna get a no!” Adams exclaimed.

The so-called arrogant reporter has not been named publically.
