A Florida woman was arrested Monday after a reported drunken domestic dispute led to a shooting and the death of a family pet.
It remains unknown what 61-year-old Suzanne Mulalley of Largo, Florida was arguing about with her husband Steven, 66, Monday, but what was not in question was that a firearm was discharged before the couple took their spat outside. Proof of that came in the form of their dead parrot, found on the premises after being struck by a bullet, Fox News reported.
“Both defendant and victim were intoxicated,” the arrest affidavit filed by the Largo Police Department said of the Mulalleys. “Defendant shot and killed her African grey bird using a .380 Glock inside her home.”
The affidavit specified that, while there was an indication of alcohol influence, there was no apparent drug use or evidence of mental health issues at the time of the arrest.
After shooting the parrot around 5 p.m. Monday, the argument carried on outside their home where both individuals were said to have been seen committing domestic battery.
“Both victim and defendant walked outside and pushed each other, then defendant sprayed victim with water using a spray bottle,” the court filing indicated and specified, “Witness saw this crime occur and filed a written witness statement.”
For her part, Mulalley denied the commission of a crime before she and her husband both spent the night in county jail with a misdemeanor charge for domestic battery.
The incident was not the first time that police had been dispatched to the couple’s home with regard to the discharge of a weapon as a separate affidavit from Feb. 23, 2023 detailed that she had been taken in after resisting arrest when she was said to have fired a gun in the heat of an argument.
The officer detailed being “dispatched to the above mentioned residence as it was alleged a firearm was discharged in the backyard during a verbal altercation. Ultimately, [the officer] attempted to take the defendant into custody while she was seated on a couch, the defendant tensed her body, and pulled away from [the officer] and attempted to conceal her hands beneath her person, after a brief struggle, the defendant was taken into custody.”
“It should be noted, there were numerous loaded firearms in plain view inside the residence,” the officer added. As with the recent incident, the Feb. report also indicated that Mulalley was under the influence of alcohol at the time of her arrest.
Following her release from county jail Tuesday, it was specifically stipulated that she was to have “no contact [with] animals,” firearms, or her husband.
Mulalley, whose weapon was seized, did not appear to face any penalty for the death of the parrot at the time of this post.
