Sen. Rick Scott has plan for Trump on how to counter pre-election Democrat shutdown

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) is anticipating another Democrat shutdown of the federal government this fall before the midterm elections and has crafted a plan to counter it.

The chairman of the Senate Steering Committee has circulated the plan to GOP senators who are set to meet with President Donald J. Trump over lunch at the Capitol on Wednesday, where, among other things, keeping the government open and passing the SAVE America Act will be on the menu.

With Democrats not likely to cooperate in passing any of a dozen spending bills before the government funding deadline on September 30, the former Florida governor is urging his Senate colleagues to get behind a plan for a clean continuing resolution to fund the government at least through the election to avoid another “Schumer shutdown,” which would be the third of the 119th Congress.

“I hope we can continue to have robust conversations as a conference this week as to how we should spend our time between now and the November elections. President Trump is scheduled to be at our Wednesday lunch. I hope everyone will be vocal as to what they think is the best path forward, but here is mine,” the Sunshine State senator said in a Monday letter to his Republican colleagues.

“We need to make it clear to all Americans that Democrats want to shut down government and don’t care how it impacts federal workers or the economy, and Republicans want to fund the government,” Scott wrote.

“Democrats don’t care whether federal workers are paid, what a government shutdown does to Americans who rely on government services, or what a shutdown does to the economy,” he explained. “Democrats have been clear that they want to shut down government on October 1st because they believe that is their path to a majority in November.”

Scott also emphasized the importance of passing the SAVE America Act or at least portions requiring photo ID to vote.

“We need to make it clear Republicans want election security and Democrats want fraud,” the senator said in his letter.

Getting the vital election integrity measures across the finish line before the midterms is one of the president’s top priorities.

“We need to make a clear distinction as to who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. We have to demonstrate what Republicans stand for and what Democrats stand for through action, not rhetoric,” he wrote.

“Republicans want to fund the government, secure our borders, deport illegal criminals, secure our elections, reduce the size of government, eliminate fraud and waste, balance the budget, and reduce taxes,” the letter read.

“Democrats stand for open borders, illegal criminals, shutting down government, higher taxes, big government, fraud, waste, and inflation caused by massive government spending. We need to show voters that we are listening to them and will fight for their priorities, whether any Democrats vote with us or not,” Scott concluded.
