Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) has set the bar for Democrats hoping to clinch the 2028 presidential nomination.
The California Democrat vowed that President Donald Trump’s “monument to corruption” ballroom must be destroyed, and Democrats running for president in 2028 must “pledge” to do so.
“Don’t even think of seeking the Democratic nomination for president unless you pledge to take a wrecking ball to the Trump Ballroom on DAY ONE,” Swalwell wrote Sunday in a post on X.

Following up, he wrote, “Or, as @RubenGallego proposes, rename it the Barack Obama Ballroom. But a Trump monument to corruption will not stand.”

Swalwell and his fellow Democrats have been apoplectic over Trump’s redesign of what was the East Wing of the White House. The 90,000 square-foot ballroom is being added at no cost to American taxpayers and is “a much-needed and exquisite addition,” according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
“The White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders in other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building’s entrance,” she said.
Critics have been up in arms over Trump’s move, despite multiple renovations and redesigns of the White House by former presidents over the decades.
Swalwell’s “litmus test” for 2028 Democratic candidates was ripped on social media.
The funniest thing about this is not that Swalwell POSTED it, but that he thought it was so brilliant that he REPOSTED it. pic.twitter.com/M26TEDlO9x

“Eric Swallows is an idiot,” Trump advisor Jason Miller wrote on X.
“These people are deranged,” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz wrote.
“Just when you thought that our political dialogue could not become more reckless,” George Washington University Law School professor Jonathan Turley wrote. “So leaders are now focusing on performative demolitions as a pitch for voters. While Miley Cyrus rode a wrecking ball to success, it is doubtful that Swalwell can ride the rage to relevance in politics.”

Tear down the privately financed, newly renovated building for no other reason besides spite, and then put the taxpayers on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild a smaller, less functional building. Got it. https://t.co/6hXqjTwZuw
