Tucker Carlson’s assurance of being a “free man” when it comes to foreign policy more than raised eyebrows after he announced a planned purchase while in Doha, Qatar.

At the same time, President Donald Trump’s administration received kudos from conservative commentators for efforts at restoring national sovereignty and exposing waste, fraud, and abuse, certain foreign policy aims have seen a schism on the right. Now, as Carlson has been a central figure on the right questioning “warmongers” in relation to Israel and Middle Eastern politics, accusations that his commentary was influenced by Qatari investors were met with his plans to buy property in Doha.

Appearing on stage at the Doha Forum while interviewing Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, the former Fox News host pointed out, “I have been criticized as being a tool of Qatar, and I just want to say, which you already know, which is I have never taken anything from your country and don’t plan to.”

“I am, however, tomorrow buying a place in Qatar,” he went on before saying, “I’m doing that because I like the city, I think it’s beautiful. But also, to make the statement that I’m an American and a free man and I’ll be wherever I wanna be.”

While the comment in and of itself was enough to draw responses on social media, flames of commentator conflict were fanned by fellow Daily Caller co-founder Neil Patel, the co-founder and CEO of the Tucker Carlson Network, who directly called out critics like syndicated radio host Mark Levin and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) with a post that included an image of Carlson raising his middle finger and another of the media personality alongside Donald Trump Jr. under the caption, “Greetings from the [bloodthirsty], terror-supporting slave state of Qatar.”

In response to the clip of Carlson at the forum, which included other speakers like Bill Gates, Breitbart News Network Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Omeed Malik, the president and founder of the Trump Jr.-partnered 1789 Capital, Levin took to X to express, “Qatarlson is Qatar’s cheap date. He’s a Qatar firster.”

He also responded directly to Patel and wrote on the platform, “Imbecilic, elitist Patel. A photo that will live in infamy.”

“I wonder what the 9/11 families think of this. Qatar is also a country that backs the Taliban, Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, etc., and is destroying our educational system, as this reprobate parties on. It’s a country that enslaves thousands, as the royal family has never worked a day. But Patel doesn’t care as the regime feeds him full of the best food and booze, and houses him in the best hotel with perfumed soap and shampoo, with their blood money. This is his ‘let them eat cake’ moment,” asserted the radio host. “Americans will grow impatient and disgusted by all this monarchy crap and the flaunting of wealth and corruption by our ruling class elites, and of course, the funding of terrorism and anti-Americanism, in the not too distant future. This photo crystallizes the cynical abandonment of populism and the America First movement by many who exploit it. We, the people, won’t put up with it. It’s just a matter of time until it unravels.”

Where it concerned connections to terrorist groups like Hamas, the prime minister defended the State of Qatar and asserted that allowing leaders to live in Qatar, as well as “communication” with them, aided in drawing down the war in Gaza.
