Tyreek Hill does ‘handcuff celebration’ to celebrate TD – after police detain him in cuffs

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was all the rage prior to the kickoff of the 2024 NFL season when the player was captured on video being detained by police while driving to Hard Rock Stadium, where the hometown Dolphins play.

Hill, who reportedly agreed to a restructured contract worth $90 million over the next three seasons, with $65 million guaranteed, is seen in the footage face down on the pavement as several police officers are handcuffing him. The player told reporters afterward that he has no idea why what was reported to be a traffic stop for speeding escalated to that point and the Miami-Dade Police Department has been mum thus far on what happened during the incident.

Either way, Hill did play in the season opener and the incident did not seem to impact his performance, though it did have an effect on how he celebrated as Miami came from behind to defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 20-17.

After catching an 80-yard touchdown pass, the longest of his career, Hill did a “handcuff celebration” in the end zone with an assist from a teammate — “woke” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell must be proud.

As for the incident, the left-of-center sports network ESPN reported that Hill “was stopped for speeding and then got into a verbal altercation with police and was subsequently placed in handcuffs.”

The network said Hill was cited for reckless driving in the traffic incident that happened about one block away from the stadium.

One of the officers involved was placed on administrative leave, according to Miami-Dade Police, which set the tone for reactions.

Stephanie Daniels, Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, said in a statement: “Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter. One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted.”

Hill’s teammate, safety Jevon Holland, immediately brought race into play.

“Excessive force on a black man is not uncommon. It’s a very common thing in America so I think that needs to be addressed at a country-wide level. I don’t think that sh*t is cool at all. It’s not unnatural or uncommon for a cop to do that type of sh*t, especially against a black man,” he told the Palm Beach Post.

Some were quick to bring Donald Trump into play, as ignorant as that may be:

Meanwhile, Tyreek Hill has a history of legal problems that appear to stem from not being able to maintain his composure.

The NFL player was the subject of an investigation by the Miami-Dade Police Department in 2023 for allegedly hitting a man working at Haulover Marina, according to Local 10 News.

It does not appear that any charges were filed and Hill reportedly admitted to local reporters that the incident was a “boneheaded mistake” that has been “resolved.”

There has also been an arrest for domestic violence — more from the Miami Herald:

In 2014, Hill was dismissed from Oklahoma State’s football team after being arrested and accused of domestic violence. Hill allegedly threw his pregnant girlfriend around “like a ragdoll,” punched her in the face, sat on her, punched her in the stomach and choked her, according to a police report obtained by the Tulsa World in Oklahoma.

Hill pleaded guilty to domestic assault and battery by strangulation. He received three years of probation and was sentenced to enroll in a year-long anger-management course, a program designed to rehabilitate those who’ve been convicted of battery.

And in 2019, Hill was the subject of a criminal investigation for alleged battery after an incident left his son, then 3, with a broken arm. As of 2019, the case was inactive after medical investigations determined the arm was broken by accident. Hill did not receive any discipline from the NFL.
