What a shame! United Nations faces ‘imminent financial collapse’ with US funding on hold

The United Nations is reportedly facing “imminent financial collapse,” according to a letter penned by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

It was revealed that the cash reserves used by the UN could run out as early as July, as Guterres begged the members of the global organization to pay their dues or overhaul the rules.

“Either all member states honor their obligations to pay in full and on time — or member states must fundamentally overhaul our financial rules to prevent an imminent financial collapse,” he wrote.

The letter did not name any specific country, but Reuters reported earlier that the United States has not paid its yearly dues, resulting in a $2.196 billion debt. President Donald Trump has made his opinion on global organizations clear, having previously withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNESCO.

An additional $1.8 billion is owed to the UN’s peacekeeping missions.

Venezuela, a country plagued by economic instability, also owes $38 million as it navigates the capture of its president, Nicolas Maduro, by American forces.

“Guterres said the U.N. ended 2025 with a record $1.568 billion in outstanding dues, more than double the amount outstanding at the end of 2024. The U.N. official said the Trump administration did not pay any dues last year,” The Associated Press reported. “Because so much is owed, the U.N.’s liquidity reserves nearly have been exhausted, Guterres said, and unless payments drastically improve, the U.N. will not be able to fulfill the $3.45 billion regular budget for 2026 approved unanimously in December by the assembly’s 193 members.”

The situation is dire, Guterres impresses in the letter.

“I cannot overstate the urgency of the situation we now face. We cannot execute budgets with uncollected funds, nor return funds we never received.”
