The “world’s richest actress” has some thoughts to share with those speculating on her wealth, and whether or not she has officially become part of the billionaire’s club.
Reese Witherspoon recently sold 70% of her clothing brand, Draper James, to Consortium Brand Partners and last week she addressed the rumors that she has amassed a net worth of over $1 billion.
“I didn’t,” she said at the INBOUND conference hosted in Boston. “They’re wrong.”
She added that she would be “so lucky” to touch even a fraction of the wealth of famous stars like Oprah Winfrey.
“That’s enormously flattering and if I ever touched the bottom of whatever Oprah’s magic golden boots do, I would be so lucky,” Witherspoon chuckled.
It’s no surprise that people might believe the actress has officially crossed the elite threshold. Between her insanely successful acting career, starring in such hits as “Legally Blonde” and “Sweet Home Alabama” and co-founding and selling companies, it makes sense that she has raked in the dough over the years. The production company “Hello Sunshine” co-founded by Witherspoon was sold in 2021, and at the time it was estimated to be worth $900 million. Its primary function was “to tell women-driven stories, including such hits as Big Little Lies, The Morning Show and Little Fires Everywhere.”
Fans may be shocked, however, to find that she’s not even halfway to the billionaire mark.
Witherspoon reportedly has a net worth of $440,000,000 which is an impressive feat for someone whose primary occupation is listed as “acting.” In the June edition of Forbes, the company created a list of wealthiest self-made women, with the actress coming in at 59, right behind ‘9 to 5’ singer Dolly Parton.
Perhaps the largest proponent of her success was the determination to dismiss the opinions of others.
“I think I started so young, and rejection was such an early piece of my life that I learned a long time ago that other people’s opinions of me are none of my business,” Witherspoon said. “I really don’t care what anybody thinks. I’m gonna do my work anyway. I’m gonna date whoever I want, go hang out with a friend nobody likes. When you release that feeling of other people’s opinions crushing you or holding you down, you’re free. You’re totally free.”
That freedom has made her one of the richest women in the world, and certainly the richest actress. Even though she may not be in Oprah territory quite yet, she may very well reach the coveted billionaire’s club if she continues her run of successful films and companies.
