Biden calls to check on ‘sandbagged’ McConnell as reports reveal unreported ‘face-plant’ again in July

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell quickly rebounded from a frightening freezing incident on Wednesday, claiming to reporters that, when President Joe Biden called to check up on him, the senator took a lighthearted jab at the gaffe-prone POTUS.

As BizPac Review reported, at the weekly Senate Republican Agenda press conference on Wednesday, the 81-year-old Kentucky Republican suddenly froze, staring blankly for 30 seconds at the gathered media members before being led away from the podium by his colleagues.

McConnell soon shook off the disturbing moment and returned to the podium to take questions.

Later in the evening, he even cracked jokes with several congressional reporters as he recalled the conversation he had with Biden, who called to make sure he was okay.

“The president called to check on me,” McConnell told the reporters. “I told him I got sandbagged.”

The snarky comeback was a reference to Biden stumbling over a sandbag at the Air Force Academy graduation last month.

When asked about “what happened,” McConnell simply insisted that he was “fine” and, “Gotta watch those sandbags!”

Meanwhile, speculation surrounding the possible cause of the incident is rampant.

According to NBC News sources, McConnell suffered a previously unreported fall while disembarking from a plane at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport this month.

The July 14th flight out of Washington was canceled. One source who, while on the plane, did not witness the actual fall described it to NBC News as a “face plant.”

The aging senator was not seriously hurt and was spotted speaking to at least one reporter at the Capitol later that day.

“McConnell has also recently been using a wheelchair as a precaution when he navigates crowded airports, said a source familiar with his practices,” NBC News reports.

A polio survivor, McConnell “who has long struggled to navigate stairs and other obstacles, has had a difficult recent history with falls,” the outlet continues. “He sustained a concussion and a cracked rib in a fall in Washington this year, and he spent six weeks away from the Senate. He fractured a shoulder in a fall in Kentucky in 2019, requiring surgery.”

One Republican senator who spoke on the condition of anonymity told NBC News that McConnell “doesn’t address” his health issues in closed-door GOP meetings.

“He’s definitely slower with his gait,” the senator said.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) assured the press that he spoke to McConnell since the incident in a regularly scheduled meeting and there were “no concerns about his health in the meeting.”

“He’s as sharp as he ever was,” stated Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) when asked if he’d witnessed anything of concern behind the scenes. “I’ll support Sen. McConnell as long as he wants to continue to serve.”

On the newly renamed X, folks aren’t convinced.

“So the whole country is role-playing Weekend at Bernie’s. What could possibly go wrong?” asked one user. “Nothing to see here. Keep moving along, folks.”
