Birth of a false narrative: Left pounces on Trump clearly ribbing ‘Gays for Trump’ supporter

The reaction on the left to former President Donald Trump clearly joking with gay supporters encapsulates the dishonesty that has marked Trump’s political ascent ever since he came down the Trump Tower escalator in June 2015.

Trump was addressing the crowd at a Mar-a-Lago fundraiser being held for John Gibbs, a Republican running against incumbent Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Mich. — the GOP lawmaker voted to impeach Trump last year — and asked, “Where’s Gays for Trump?”

“We’re over here!” a voice called out, prompting Trump to joke, “You don’t look gay.” He would go on to say, “We did great with the gay population, as you know.”

The room burst into laughter because it was clear that Trump was ribbing the man, yet the left pounced to portray the incident in a derogatory light.

The liberal Patriot Takes group shared the video, as seen above, adding in a separate tweet, “Trump thinks gay people have to look a certain way,” before appealing for donations.

And there you have it, the birth of a dishonest narrative.

In reporting on the remark, Newsweek stated that “many within the LGBTQ+ population find it offensive to be told that they ‘look’ or ‘don’t look’ gay.”

The article cited a 2018 op-ed from David Hudson, deputy editor of Gay Star News, who wrote: “But what of that statement? ‘You don’t look gay.’ How are we supposed to react to that? Is it being offered as a statement of surprise? Or as a clunky and misguided compliment? At the very least, it would suggest the person saying it thinks gay people look a certain way.”

In reality, the video appears to debunk the left’s claims that the gay community is scorned and otherwise rejected on the right, as the gay supporters are not only a welcome addition to the event but draw special recognition from Trump.
