Veteran political strategist James Carville came out of left field with the Republican whom he thinks would be the “biggest threat” to the Democrats in 2028.
With President Donald J. Trump term-limited, much of the conversation about who will be his successor has focused on Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, but one name that isn’t being mentioned – until now – is Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.
The “Ragin’ Cajun” shocked Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren when he dropped the name of the Georgia Republican who is on nobody’s BINGO card when it comes to predicting the 2028 GOP nominee.
“I don’t know. Maybe Brian Kemp, but I’ll throw a name out,” Carville said.

“No, why? Really, Brian?” Van Susteren exclaimed, appearing stunned by his answer.
“You asked me a question,” the crusty Carville responded, going on to explain why he thinks Kemp would be a formidable candidate.
“I just threw a name. I said I’ll just throw a name out. He strikes me; he wins elections in Georgia by more than he should,” he said, referring to Kemp’s easily winning the battleground state despite his differences with Trump.
“He was taken on Trump and he won easily,” the 81-year-old Democrat continued. “He’s a pretty savvy operator, but I don’t really know him.”
Carville then compared the Georgia governor to the names of those expected to contend to succeed Trump, expressing his opinion that Dems are licking their chops over the prospect of it being the vice president.
“If the country is so turned on Trump, is so turned, my favorite would be like Rubio or JD Vance. JD Vance would be the all-world choice for Democrats,” he told Van Susteren, adding “Because he’s part of an administration that has a 36 percent approval, so he’s not a good number.”
“You ask me who I think would be the weakest, it would be JD Vance,” he stated, although expressed doubt that the veep will get the nod.
“I really don’t think about that a lot,” Carville said. “But the best in terms of Democrats would be Vance, but they’re not going to nominate him.”
Kemp has not thrown his hat into the ring for 2028 yet, nor has he publicly expressed a desire to do so.
Carville has been living off of his reputation as the architect of Slick Willie’s1992 election for more than three decades now, having gotten credit for the former Arkansas governor’s improbable win after he coined the bumper sticker slogan “it’s the economy stupid” that resonated with voters.
But the idea that the trash-talking Louisianan was some sort of mastermind has always been a myth because, more than anything, Bill Clinton benefited from the presence of third-party candidate Ross Perot to siphon support from incumbent President George HW Bush in the 1992 election.
The Democrat curmudgeon has predicted that Trump is going to resign the presidency on multiple occasions.
“What I’m going to talk about is the possibility of resignation, because he doesn’t know how much his life is getting ready to change post-November,” Carville said on his podcast earlier this year.
“He’ll still be president; his power is going to just ebb out,” he said, adding, “This guy’s got two years to go. He’s lost the whole public opinion. He’s lost the whole Senate. He’s lost the House. The lobbyists are going to start cutting deals on the other side.”
