Clay Travis offers WNBA champs $1 million to play high school boy’s basketball team

The reigning WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces were the recipients of a unique challenge from nationally syndicated talk radio host Clay Travis who seems to believe that the best women’s basketball team in the U.S. would be hard-pressed to beat a boy’s high school team.

Travis reacted to a putdown from Aces star guard Chelsea Gray who called him a “dumbass” for expressing his opinion that “a good, state championship caliber, high school boys team would smoke the best team in the WNBA,” by giving her a chance to put her money where her mouth is.

On Friday, the Outkick founder took to X, formerly Twitter, in a response to Gray’s insult, offering up one million dollars to the winner of a basketball game between the WNBA champs and a boy’s state high school team of his choosing.

“I’ll put a million dollars on the line, your WNBA champion team against a 2024 high school boy’s state champion team of my choice. You guys win, you get a million bucks of my money, my team wins, you all pay me a million and I give it all to the boy’s high school team. You in?” Travis asked.

Travis suggested that an added benefit to Gray and her team would be more television exposure for the ratings challenged league.

Travis also said that if the Aces accept the offer, that he is considering putting the game on pay per view, virtually guaranteeing that it would make more money for the one contest than the league makes in a year and that it would also be the league’s most watched game in its history.

Judging from the responses on X, it looks like Travis is onto something as far as drawing more eyes to the WNBA.

Upping the ante, Travis also reached out to the WNBA and the Aces for comment but hasn’t received a response yet.

The WNBA has struggled to gain an enthusiastic following and only received major national attention when one of its players, the tattooed, dope-smoking, anti-American lesbian was imprisoned in Russia after violating the country’s drug laws. Brittney Griner’s release was a top priority for President Joe Biden who swapped her for notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout aka the Merchant of death in a lopsided trade earlier this year.

While Travis’s challenge could be a boon for the WNBA in terms of exposure, the downside clearly scares the hell out of them.
