‘Two peas in a pod’: DeSantis reacts to Gov. Newsom meeting with Xi Jinping

Florida Governor and 2024 presidential candidate Ron DeSantis wasn’t a bit surprised to see progressive California Governor Gavin Newsom cozying up to Chinese President Xi Jinping last week.

“When I saw the photos, the thing that came to my mind was – you know, these are guys that are two peas in the pod with respect to COVID, draconian COVID policies,” DeSantis told DailyMail.com.

Speaking in Las Vegas, Nevada, the GOP primary hopeful noted, “They both had very lengthy lock downs, curtailed people’s ability to work, go to school, all that.”

“I know California,” he added, “because a lot of people fled to Florida because of what he did.”

As BizPac Review reported, Newsom left the crime-ridden, drug-plagued streets of California to discuss for a week the climate with Xi, whose country is notorious for pollution and human rights violations.

The slick Democrat was mercilessly mocked on X for posting a photo of himself at the Great Wall of China.

According to DeSantis, the visit signaled that America is willing to “grovel” at Xi’s feet, DailyMail.com reports.

Though Newsom has yet to announce what many see as his inevitable run for the White House, the governors have agreed to participate in a debate that will be aired in a primetime slot on Fox News. Sean Hannity will moderate the Nov. 30 event, which will be held in Georgia.

The disparate duo has been trading barbs for quite some time now.

In June 2022, Newsom’s re-election campaign spent roughly $105,000 on cable television ads to air on Fox News in Florida. It was widely seen as an act of desperation, with DeSantis’ campaign spokesperson, Dave Abrams, saying at the time, “Gavin Newsom might as well light a pile of cash on fire.”

“Pass the popcorn for his desperate attempt to win back the California refugees who fled the hellhole he created in his state to come to Florida,” Abrams stated.

In September, DeSantis slammed Newsom, blaming him for California’s “decline.”

“Decline is a choice and success is attainable,” DeSantis wrote on X. “As President, I will lead America’s revival. I look forward to the opportunity to debate Gavin Newsom over our very different visions for the future of our country.”

“‘We’re ready [to debate],” DeSantis told DailyMail.com on Saturday. “It’ll be fun, it will be a good debate for the country to have.”

Meanwhile, Newsom appears fixated on smearing DeSantis, attempting to catch him in a “gotcha” moment whenever possible.

“A very simple question — should Republicans dine with a holocaust denier?” Newsom asked earlier this month. “It takes Ron DeSantis 4 questions, 3 attempts at a pivot, and over a minute to give an even semi-coherent answer.”

“Listen for yourself…” he urged followers.

And in the out-of-context clip about a dinner former President Donald Trump had at Mar-a-Lago with Nick Fuentes, DeSantis states he rejects “all conspiracy theories of that nature.”

Try harder, Gavin…
