‘Clear corruption’: Jeffries attempts to strong-arm federal judges to oust Alina Habba

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is facing an ethics complaint for “improperly inserting himself” in a proceeding.

The New York Democrat was accused of “clear corruption” after he called on federal district judges to remove acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba from her position. Habba, a former legal spokesperson for the Trump campaign, has been serving as the acting U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey and is still awaiting Senate confirmation.

Habba charged Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., with obstructing Homeland Security agents after the lawmaker allegedly assaulted law enforcement officers outside of an immigration detention facility in Newark back in May. McIver has pleaded not guilty and her case goes to trial in November.

“The so-called U.S. Attorney in NJ maliciously indicted Congresswoman LaMonica McIver for doing her job,” Jeffries declared in a post on X. “Habba is a woefully unqualified political hack who must go.”

“She must be rejected by the Federal District Court Judges who are considering whether to retain her,” Jeffries added.

Republican activists in the Article III Project followed up with a House Ethics complaint filed against the Democrat leader over the weekend, accusing him of  “improperly inserting himself into a criminal proceeding.”

“This is clear corruption by House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries,” and the complaint asked the House Ethics Committee to hold the lawmaker “accountable.”

“A House member – particularly the House Democratic leader – who disagrees with the merits of a pending criminal case abuses his official position when he attempts to strong-arm federal judges to corruptly prejudice the ongoing criminal proceeding by firing the U.S. attorney for the purely political reason of protecting a partisan House colleague,” the complaint said.

Founder and president of the Article III Project, Mike Davis, said Jeffries’ call for judges to oust Habba is “purely political.”
