‘Political animal!’ Dem Sen calls to take back ‘stolen seats’ from ‘illegitimate’ SCOTUS in wake of TX shooting

Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey appears to be exploiting the tragedy in Uvalde to push the Democrat Party’s radical agenda.

During a press conference Thursday alongside several other Democrats, Markey explicitly called for expanding the Supreme Court with Democrats to ensure that any draconian gun laws signed into law remain unchallenged by the judicial branch.

“We have to take very seriously the threat which an illegitimate, far-right Supreme Court poses to gun safety in our country. We have to expand the Supreme Court to get back the two stolen seats that the Republicans and Donald Trump took from the American people, so that we can ensure that when we put gun safety laws on the books, they are not overridden by the Supreme Court of the United States,” he said.

The remarks provoked swift backlash:

Democrats have been trying to expand the Supreme Court since the day President Joe Biden took office. Thus far their efforts have been stymied primarily by Democrat Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, both of whom refuse to kill the filibuster, a move that would be required for Democrats to expand the high court.

Democrats have similarly been trying to enact draconian gun control measures for years on end, though their shrieks always grow significantly louder after a mass shooting like the recent ones in Buffalo and then Uvalde.

However, critics say that the gun laws Democrats are so desperate to pass into law would have done nothing to stop shootings like the ones in Buffalo and Uvalde.

Consider universal background checks. Both the Buffalo and the Uvalde shooters reportedly passed background checks when purchasing their weapons.

Also, consider bans on so-called “assault rifles.” A recent report from the National Institute of Justice revealed that of the mass shootings that occurred between 1966 and 2019, 77 percent involved handguns, not rifles or so-called “assault rifles.”

Lastly, consider bans on all weapons, period.

A study published by the Department of Justice in 2019 found that of the 287,400 criminals locked up in 2016 for criminal offenses involving weapons, over 90 percent of them had obtained the weapons illegally.

“More than half (56%) had either stolen it (6%), found it at the scene of the crime (7%), or obtained it off the street or from the underground market (43%). Most of the remainder (25%) had obtained it from a family member or friend, or as a gift,” the study reads.

During the press conference Thursday, Markey also attacked the National Rifle Association.

Listen:

“Thank you to every activist — an army of activists — that has risen up across our country to fight the NRA, to fight the Republican Party. The Republican Party is within a vise-like grip of the NRA. They do whatever the NRA tells them that they should do.,” he claimed.

“What the American people want is for NRA to stand for Not Relevant Anymore in American politics. They want the Republicans who work in this building to finally have the courage to stand up to the NRA, to finally stand up for the families in our country.”

This set of remarks also provoked backlash, even from those who view the NRA with disdain:

Democrats believe the NRA is America’s “gun lobby.” But critics say the real gun lobby is comprised of the 100 million+ of Americans who proudly own a firearm and have no interest in seeing their constitutionally guaranteed Second Amendment rights be infringed upon …
