House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan blasted Attorney General Merrick Garland in his first appearance before the committee for overseeing a Department of Justice that employs a double standard centered around politics.
“Everyone knows the fix is in,” Jordan said in his opening statement. “And you wonder why four out of five Americans believe there are now two standards of justice in our great country.”
The Ohio Republican accused Garland of offering a “ridiculous” sweetheart plea deal after trying to protect Hunter Biden from tax fraud and gun charges by blocking prosecutor David Weiss from filing those charges.
“They limited the number of witnesses that could be interviewed. They tipped off the defense counsel about a subpoena. The judge says the plea deal was a joke. And all that’s just half the story,” Jordan said. “There’s one investigation protecting President Biden. There’s another one attacking President Trump.”
Jordan would also accuse Garland of “attacking” former President Donald Trump, and he referenced the targeting of parents at school board meetings and the persecution of pro-life Catholics.
As expected, Garland insisted that the DOJ never obstructed the Hunter Biden investigation but refused to say whether he’s spoken to Weiss or anyone else about the probe, the New York Post reported.
He also downplayed two IRS whistleblowers testifying earlier this year that political appointees interfered in the probe, declining to charge Hunter in both Washington and Southern California.
IRS supervisory agent Gary Shapley and IRS special agent Joseph Ziegler also said they were blocked from taking certain steps, including examining Joe Biden’s links to his son and brother’s overseas business interests, according to the New York Post.
Sounding much like a Democratic operative, Garland declared: “We will not be intimidated. We will do our jobs, free from outside influence, and we will not back down from defending our democracy.”
Ranking member U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) ran interference for both Hunter Biden and AG Garland in his opening statement.
“Mr. Chairman, at the outset, let me make two comments. One: Just about every assertion you made in your opening statement has been completely refuted by witnesses who have testified before this committee,” Nadler claimed. “Two: Far from being favored, many commentators have noted that people accused of simple gun possession while under the influence of a drug, when that gun was not used in the commission of a crime, are rarely, if ever, prosecuted the way Hunter Biden is being prosecuted.”
Nadler, who played a central role in the sham impeachment of former President Donald Trump lectured Jordan about one of the committee’s most important duties being oversight of the Justice Department, before launching an attack on Republicans.
“We are called upon to ensure that the DOJ uses the enormous amount of power it is granted in a fair and just manner that respects the civil and human rights of all Americans,” he said. “The Attorney General of the United States oversees issues that affect the lives of each and every American: violent crime, drug trafficking, tax and civil rights, threats to our national security, and environmental crimes all fall under his purview.”
“But if it were up to the Republicans, Americans would hear nothing about any of these substantive issues today,” Nadler continued. “They would hear nothing about the rise in domestic terrorism and what the Justice Department is doing about it. They would hear nothing about what the department is doing to stop hate crimes and prevent gun violence. They’d hear nothing about how the department is disrupting efforts by Russia, China, and others to interfere in our elections.”
According to cabal on the left, we are supposed to believe that white supremacy is the top domestic terrorist threat. Of course, any speech from Nadler will eventiually get around to Donald Trump and the Democrat did not disappoint.
“Extreme MAGA Republicans have poisoned our vital oversight work. They’ve ignored our legitimate oversight responsibilities and used their power to stage one political stunt after another,” he added. “They have wasted countless taxpayer dollars on baseless investigations into President Biden and his family, desperate to find evidence for an absurd impeachment, and desperate to distract from the mounting legal peril facing Donald Trump.”
