Fair and balanced? Jon Stewart calls Supreme Court the ‘Fox News of justice’

Despite a spirited effort to present himself as an independent thinker, Jon Stewart can always be counted on to fall in line with the major talking points on the left when it matters most. He can also be counted on to say something pretty stupid during these times.

In a discussion Thursday on the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, Stewart called the nation’s highest court the “Fox News of justice” — which may actually be a compliment given that, despite some recent backsliding,  the network may be the most “fair and balanced” player on cable news.

Stewart made the inane comparison on his podcast, “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” during a segment with law professors Leah Litman, Melissa Murray, and Kate Shaw, along with show writers Tocarra Mallard and Kris Acimovic.

“In my mind, the idea that this was based in any kind of reasoned debate or philosophical education — the Supreme Court is now the Fox News of justice, in my mind,” Stewart said.

“It is a cynical pursuit — in the same way that Fox News would come out with ‘We’re fair and balanced’ under the patina of what would be a high-status pursuit to the betterment of society, journalism. They are a cynical political arm,” he continued. “When you look at the ridiculous kabuki theater now of justice confirmation, where they can just go out there and just f*cking lie, like if this were about debate, then they would’ve understood what perjury meant.”

(Being a “cynical political arm” may be a step up from CNN and MSNBC, who cannot be differentiated in the minds of many from the campaign arm of the Democratic Party.)

“But they are now the Fox News of justice. I mean, there is no consistency. States can’t regulate guns, but they can regulate uterus, you know?”

Acimovic would chime in later to say, “It makes no sense. There’s no coherence.”

“I think the thing that struck me was, you know, the ‘arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.’ Right? And I think we’re all sort of steeped in that ethos,” Stewart waxed on. “What you don’t realize is there is a goodly amount of individuals who are trying to bend it back.”
