Finger-wagging Katie Couric bemoans NBC Trump interview: ‘He’s sexist and he rolls over women’

Former NBC personality Katie Couric took swipes at her old organization with some Monday morning quarterbacking regarding “sexist” former President Donald Trump’s appearance on “Meet the Press.”

“So if had been producing that…”

Whether fishing for her own chance to score an interview with the president or happy to play pretend from the sidelines, the one-time host of “Today” envisioned a fact-check frenzy that would end “with him walking off.”

Speaking from the stage at the annual Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Texas, the journalist covered a number of topics Friday, including Trump’s interview by NBC News’ new host of “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker.

“I think that it’s very, very difficult for a journalist — and we saw this with the CNN town hall and more recently on ‘Meet the Press’ — for a journalist to interview Donald Trump because he ignores every question and he’s just like a bulldozer,” she asserted. “He just doesn’t listen to the questions and just, just talks over you and repeats lies and you can try to correct him.”

“And I really don’t appreciate that the women are the sacrificial lambs in these situations,” contended Couric who managed to slight her own peers with a charge that none would be able to go toe-to-toe with Trump before backpedaling. “I think it’s because he’s sexist and he rolls over women more and I think he refuses, probably — I think Jonathan Swan kind of was the most successful guy to get him, but I think he refuses to interview men because I think probably some of his female, you know, interrogators are more polite. I don’t know what it is…I don’t know. It’s tricky. It’s very, very tricky.”

As previously reported, Welker’s premiere installment at the helm of “Meet the Press” previously took heat from leftists not for the manner in which she conducted the interview, but for hosting Trump at all.

“What a disastrous stenography job with Trump,” frothed Keith Olbermann while SiriusXM host Dean Obeidallah railed, “Nothing like kicking off your new political show with a man who attempted a coup and incited the Jan 6 attack. It’s as if corporate media wants FASCISM. Plus she will lose liberals forever.”

Couric further asserted that Trump had been given the opportunity to spout lies unchecked by Welker and that, had she been in the same position, things would have gone quite differently.

“If it’s videotaped, what I would have done is, I would have to the best of my ability — and I think Kristen tried to come back at him — but I would have had so many facts and figures ready and I would have been really focused on predicting what he was going to say,” she claimed. “I would have some system. And I think absent of that, if he still insists his lies are — or he’s telling the truth or he’s not fabricating stuff, I think I would have done interstitials within the body of the view and said…’Actually despite his protestations, this is not true.’ And I would have given the reasons why.”

Arguing the president “gets his way” through “bluster and bravado and bullying,” Couric reiterated, “So if I had been producing that, I would have done these interstitials and corrected the record in real time as the interview aired.”

While some called out how they imagined the former NBC host would actually conduct an interview with Trump moving forward, others questioned her relevance in the media landscape.
