Georgia Dems walk out in stunt backing transgender inmate sex change surgery

Georgia House Democrats walked out in protest of a bill that bans taxpayer-funded sex change surgeries for prison inmates, an issue that has little public support outside of the party’s activist base.

The leftist lawmakers staged their futile Wednesday stunt to get media attention for their dissatisfaction over a series of bills that they claim are attacks on transgenders, a minuscule demographic.

The protest, which all but two Democrats took part in, was a reaction to the lopsided, 100-2 vote on SB 185, a Republican-backed bill that will bar the Georgia Department of Corrections from providing transgender medical treatments and surgical procedures to mentally disturbed men who think that they are women. The bill is headed to the desk of Republican Governor Brian Kemp for his signature.

Republican state Senator Randy Robertson, who sponsored the bill,l says that there are five inmates who are receiving the treatments, which include hormonal treatments and gender reassignment operations.

“This disappointing stunt underscores a troubling disconnect between Democrats and the values of the people they serve,” GOP House Majority Whip James Burchett told Fox News Digital. “They knew they had no response to the substance of the bill. So, rather than debate its merits, they chose to abandon their duties by leaving the chamber.”

“What is going on with my colleagues that they have become obsessed with what is happening in transgender citizens’ pants and their underwear and their bedroom and their medical robes, when they talk to their doctors, when they deal with their families?” House Democratic Caucus Chair Tanya Miller, an Atlanta Democrat, asked.

The Democrats may have believed their move was stunning and brave but it was mocked and ridiculed by X users.

The walkout is a sign that the party is prepared to go down with the ship on the unpopular issue.

A recent CNN poll found that the party currently enjoys a miserable 21 percent approval rating, and there may be no bottom in sight as Democrats double and triple down on issues that are opposed by 80 percent of the public.
