President Joe Biden took a short break from his Lake Tahoe vacation to fly to Maui for a photo op. The trip comes two weeks after tragic wildfires broke out, devastating parts of the island and killing at least 114 people — Biden was staying at the Nevada home of climate activist and billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer, his second vacation in August.
As Biden is wont to do when addressing tragedies, he makes the occasion all about himself. While his late son Beau Biden is usually his fallback, especially when meeting with Gold Star families, on Monday the president spoke about losing his first wife and daughter in a car accident more than 50 years ago in recognizing the high loss of life in Lahaina:

But another moment stood out when it comes to the state of Biden’s presidency. Standing on the podium with first lady Jill Biden, and Hawaii’s two Democratic senators, Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono, the 80-year-old president had that ever-familiar look of confusion on his face as he stared into the abyss with his mouth hanging open.
Clearly not sure what to do, Biden eventually followed Mrs. Biden as they walked away, but not before Sen. Schatz asked the president, “You wanna grab that water for a sip?”
The reference was to a bottle of water on the lectern, but Biden pretty much ignored the inquiry as Schatz looked on awkwardly:

As for making it all about himself, Biden also let residents know that he can relate to their plight of having entire not only their homes but entire neighborhoods reduced to ashes, as he once had a small kitchen fire at home — you can’t make this stuff up.

It would be a stretch to say POTUS was warmly received on his photo-op trip.

As Joe Biden finally arrives in Maui, he’s met by OUTRAGED locals holding signs that read:
“You’re too late!”
“Actions speak louder than words.”Just brutal. pic.twitter.com/tSVWcdKyq3

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story as seen on “X,” formerly known as Twitter:
If you didn’t know already, this clip helps explain why it took him 2 weeks to actually go to Maui.

I hate the way he stands around with his mouth hanging open. Everything about him projects weakness.

His attempts at empathy almost always come across as one-upping the victims. He did the same thing to Marine families just after the bombing, when all he talked about his his loss.

This administration truly is turning into Weekend at Bernie’s!

Same frozen, confused expression. They hid him until they thought he was in a good enough spot to make it through an appearance, and this is what “good enough” is these days.

He’s fine. Looks like he knows exactly what’s happening. He’s fine. Going back on vacation afterward. https://t.co/HSS0PKNwb8

This is so sad. He clearly has no idea where he is or what’s happening and apparently not a single family member loves him enough to step in and say enough is enough. https://t.co/rAr0OUueku
