A warning with all the hallmarks of Bush-era politics found Karl Rove massaging amnesty talking points with doomsaying about a red state’s “problem” for congressional control.

The messaging battles of the midterm elections are already well underway as both sides of the aisle have sounded off on the gravity of the November contest regarding the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term. While RINOs in Congress have dragged their feet on a number of issues like confirming nominees, Rove took to the Fox News airwaves to argue for an outright reversal on American national sovereignty with a dire outlook for Republicans in Texas.
Joining Fox News’ “The Journal Editorial Report” on Saturday with host Gerry Baker, the former senior adviser to then-President George W. Bush, made his case that the GOP had been steadily losing favor on tackling illegal immigration before an anti-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activist had been fatally shot, sparking increased violent protests from the left.
“These ICE tactics seem to make — have particular concerns, understandably, for Hispanic voters. Hispanic voters, again, source of tremendous strength for Trump in the election 2024,” said Baker, who cited polls from the Associated Press and Quinnipiac University showing diminishing approval. “You know the numbers he got, what, over 40% of the Hispanic vote? He’s now registering way, way below that in approval ratings among Hispanics. How much of a problem is that for the GOP?”
“Big,” responded Rove, “because this is a variable group whose movement into the Republican column in 2024 helped elect Donald Trump to a second term and helped Republicans hold the Senate and the House. But no, it’s a problem. And you know, we’re gonna see it here in Texas.”
The political commentator attempted to make the case that Trump had missed the opportunity for a victory lap surrounded by elected Democrat officials by not visiting the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas prior to the uptick in tension.
He also attempted to sell a “forgiving attitude” for illegal aliens who hadn’t committed other crimes, suggesting Republican voters would get behind amnesty to support industries like construction, farming, and hospitality.
“You can just see the support for Republicans in Texas diminishing, despite the fact that initially there was enormous support for the action in securing the border,” he told Baker. “These were communities that were being hard hit. Their hospitals, their food kitchens, their community safety, all of these things were being adversely affected by this vast flood of illegals coming across the border, and the fact that the president stopped it and stopped it without a new law — all we had was a new president, but he got it done.”
Social media users weren’t buying the angle of the “RINO Karl Rove and leftist narrative” that Trump was losing ground on his America First approach to national sovereignty, and they weren’t shy about saying as much.
