Mamdani quietly inks $8.9M in contracts funding ‘gender-affirming care’ for kids

Contract plans for child chemical castration set Gotham’s mayor against the Trump administration to the tune of millions as Hizzoner was accused of behaving like his “own national government.”

While President Donald Trump has worked to restore once widely-accepted realities on gender, leftists like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) have plowed ahead with fulfilling the whims of the spirit of the age. Despite a leading hospital system in the Big Apple reaching an agreement with the Justice Department to remain in accord with federal law on genital mutilation and chemical castration of minors, the NYC Department of Health (DOH) moved ahead with nearly $9 million in contracts for so-called “gender-affirming care.”

A notification published Tuesday by the DOH called for three-year contracts totaling roughly $8.9 million to provide chemical castration to children with consent from Albany. DOH “… intends to process a Negotiated Acquisition solicitation as there is a compelling need for gender-affirming care services that cannot be met timely by competitive sealed proposals.”

“NYC Health will contract with organizations providing or facilitating the provision of gender-affirming care to patients under age 18. This includes the prescription and administration of puberty-blockers and hormone replacement therapy to all minor patients for whom such services are medically necessary based on the prevailing standards of care,” read the notification that further stated services would follow the state’s laws on parental consent while it identified Callen-Lorde and Nonprofit Organization for Philanthropic Initiatives (NOPI) as potential vendors.

“They’re making an ideological decision instead of a medical decision,” expressed New York Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar to the New York Post. “They’re trying to pull a fast one. New York City thinks it is its own national government. It further isolates us from the rest of the country.”

Earlier this year, Mamdani’s administration announced a $15 million investment toward funding a hotline for those seeking services, a “direct” access fund for services and so-called “medical care.”

Speaking with the magazine Them, Hizzoner contended, “Every New Yorker should have the freedom to live as themselves and access the healthcare they need. As the federal government attacks transgender people and attempts to intimidate patients, families and providers, New York City is stepping up.”

“We will protect care, support the providers delivering it and make clear that trans New Yorkers belong in this city. Healthcare is a human right, and we will do everything in our power to defend it,” said the mayor.

Upon his return to the White House in January 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending federal funding for “chemical and surgical mutilation” of children, promptly leading several hospitals to suspend the practices.

Last month, the Justice Department’s enforcement efforts resulted in agreements with New York University Langone Hospitals and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to resolve investigations into “potential violations of federal law arising from their provision of sex-rejecting procedures on children …”
