Ron DeSantis is back in the news again after a photograph showing him campaigning for Romney surfaced fueling an over-the-top media frenzy.
The media is framing the photograph as going against DeSantis’ claims that he doesn’t support Romney’s agenda.
ABC News reporters are pushing a black and white yearbook photo showing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis holding up a “Romney for Governor” sign when he was at Harvard Law School twenty years ago.
DeSantis is a Republican and supported the candidate for his party when he was in college. Holding up a sign during the 2002 Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign does not categorically imply he knew Romney or that he supports him now. Despite that fact, ABC News ran with the headline, “DeSantis says Romney ‘never fought for us.’ An unearthed yearbook photo shows he once campaigned for him.”

The piece on ABC News crafted by three reporters was posted after DeSantis took aim at Romney on Tuesday, asserting that he was part of the “surrender caucus of Republicans” who are part of “the same old, same old Republicans who have never fought for us in the beginning.”
“I don’t really know Mitt Romney,” DeSantis told the outlet concerning a Romney-backed gathering of presidential candidates that was held in October.
“A caption on the page describes the school’s ‘Law Republicans’ group as the ‘voice’ of the Republican Party at Harvard Law, aiming ‘to provide a social community of moderate and conservative Republicans.’ The group would ‘organize community blood drives and a Ronald Reagan birthday celebration,’ according to the text,” the reporters wrote.
The DeSantis campaign wouldn’t speak to ABC News concerning the allegation that campaigning for the GOP nominee 20 years ago means that the firebrand conservative supports Romey now.
Three ABC investigative reporters were needed for this report on DeSantis “campaigning” for Romney for governor so long ago that the photo of him simply holding up a sign is in black & white.

“More than two decades separate DeSantis’ critical comments from the yearbook photo, and both men have undertaken vastly different trajectories in the intervening years,” the reporters admitted in the piece.
“Romney emerged as the Republican party’s presidential candidate in 2012 but has since become a pariah as the GOP base moves increasingly to the right. Romney announced in September that he would not seek reelection to the Senate,” they went on to note.
DeSantis graduated from Harvard Law in 2005. ABC News quoted an unnamed classmate who claimed he said that the presidential candidate is a “conservative, but not particularly outspoken.”
“Quiet guy … kept to himself,” another anonymous classmate reportedly said. “[DeSantis] did not really become part of the social fabric of the law school community at all — to the extent he had friends, it was the Federalist Society crowd.”

DeSantis also attended Yale as an undergraduate before he attended Harvard Law.
ABC News quoted yet another unnamed classmate from Yale who said, “He was for sure proud of making it here,” before describing DeSantis as a typical “jock.”
DeSantis has not embraced his Ivy League pedigree, writing in his book “The Courage to Be Free” that his degrees from Yale and Harvard are “political scarlet letters.”
Romney is no fan of DeSantis. In an interview with his biographer, McKay Coppins, Romney said DeSantis “looks like he’s got a toothache” on the campaign trail and “there’s just no warmth at all,” according to ABC News.
