California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is expected to be reelected in November with ease, traveled to Austin, Texas over the weekend and called on the Democratic Party to overhaul its political strategy because they are too timid and are “getting crushed” by Republicans, who “dominate with illusion.”
Newsom spoke at the Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday and declared that the GOP is “winning,” but doesn’t seem to grasp that it’s crushing 40-year high inflation and extreme issues like the sexualization of children that may be turning off voters.
“These guys are ruthless on the other side,” the governor said, according to ABC News. “Where are we? Where are we organizing, bottom up, a compelling alternative narrative? Where are we going on the offense every single day? They’re winning right now.”
He attended the event despite California banning state-funded travel to Texas due to “discriminatory laws,” one of 22 states on the list — this being the kneejerk reaction to a North Carolina law preventing transgender people from using restrooms that aligned with their own identity.
With his reelection seemingly in the bag, Newsom “has been spending some of the millions of dollars in his campaign account on TV ads in Florida urging people to move to California, newspaper ads in Texas decrying the state’s gun laws, and putting up billboards in seven states urging women to come to California if they need an abortion,” ABC News reported.
The billboards hit a new low in that they quote the Bible in advocating for the killing of unborn babies.
“Need an abortion?” the billboards ask. “California is ready to help.”
The message includes a verse from Mark 12:31: “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these.”

And Newson is far from apologetic in doing so.
“There’s nothing worse than someone pointing fingers. What are you going to do about it?” he said. “The reason we’re doing those ads is because … the Democratic Party needs to be doing more of it.”
In the end, it may be all about drawing headlines ahead of a possible 2024 presidential run — Newsom has denied that he is running and did so Saturday in Austin, according to Fox News.
“No, not happening,” he replied, when asked if he was considering running for president. “I cannot say it enough. I never trust politicians, so I get why you keep asking.”
Of course, painting himself as an outsider might be the strongest indication that he is running. Another indicator may be last week’s weak-kneed attempt to glom onto the publicity Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis garnered when he flew two planeloads of illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard. Newsom challenged DeSantis, who is seen as the leading GOP presidential contender if Donald Trump doesn’t run, to a debate and got a taste of what may lie in store when the popular Republican governor responded by saying Newsom’s “hair gel is interfering with his brain function.”
According to two sources who spoke with The Wrap recently, Newsom is “undeniably, unequivocally” planning to run in 2024 if President Biden chooses not to seek a second term.
“After this midterm election is over, he absolutely is going to announce that he is running for the presidency once Biden announces that he is not running,” a leading California fundraiser with close ties to the Newsom family told TheWrap. “No ifs, ands or buts. He will run if Biden does not.”
