Nikki Haley set to announce 2024 run, becoming first GOP candidate to challenge Trump

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is set to announce that she will run for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, which would make her the first GOP candidate to challenge former President Donald Trump.

Haley, who served as ambassador to the United Nations in the Trump administration, “will formally declare her candidacy for the White House at an event in Charleston on Feb. 15, according to Fox News.

“After November, we’ll figure it out,” Haley said last year when a reporter asked her about a presidential run. “But you know what I’ve said — I’ve never lost a race. I’m not going to start now. If there’s a place for me, we’ll put 100% in, and we’ll finish it.”

Haley shared a video clip over the weekend of an interview she did with Fox News calling for a new generation of leaders.

“The survival of America matters,” she said in the clip. “It’s bigger than one person. And when you’re looking at the future of America, I think it’s time for new generational change. I don’t think you need to be 80 years old to go be a leader in DC. I think we need a young generation to come in, step up, and really start fixing things.”

Trump, 76, told reporters over the weekend as he flew from a campaign speech in New Hampshire to a leadership kickoff in South Carolina that Haley, the daughter of immigrants from India, called him to discuss a White House bid.

“Go by your heart if you want to run,” Trump said he told Haley, before further advising her that she “should do it.”

“She said she would never run against me because I was the greatest president, but people change their opinions, and they change what’s in their hearts,” Trump told WIS-TV. “So I said, if your heart wants to do it, you have to go do it.”

At the same time, he remarked that Haley had “publicly” said she would not run in 2024 if Trump ran again — this occurring in 2021, although Haley indicated later that same year that a run was possible either way.

“I would not run if President Trump ran, and I would talk to him about it. That’s something that we will have a conversation about at some point if that decision is something that has to be made,” she told the Associated Press in April 2021.

Video of that statement was making the rounds online Tuesday evening as reports of Haley running circulated.

Ultimately, the GOP field is likely to be crowded, with Fox News detailing a list of other potential candidates: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and former two-term Govs. Larry Hogan of Maryland and Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas. Others could include Govs. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, Chris Sununu of New Hampshire, and Kristi Noem of South Dakota, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, and former Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Will Hurd of Texas.
