NYC mayor slams Biden admin for losing 500,000 migrant children, announces ‘sanctuary city’ changes

New York City has prided itself on being a sanctuary city for many years, but as untold numbers of migrants take their toll on the Big Apple, it’s clear that big changes are needed.

Mayor Eric Adams recently met with President-elect Donald Trump’s “border czar” Tom Homan, and this appears to have changed his tune on the key issue of the city’s sanctuary status. Adams is enthusiastic about working with the incoming administration on immigration issues and is even blasting President Joe Biden’s administration for its failure to account for a large number of migrant children.

“We have 500,000 children who have sponsors in this country that we can’t find. We can’t find them,” he stressed. “We don’t know if they’re doing child labor, sex crimes, being exploited, 500,000 children.”

“There is a level of hypocrisy for people who say they want to protect everyone. I want to support innocent children and those who are victims of crimes. Those who don’t understand that, it’s not up to me to try to convince them,” he continued, defending his work with Trump’s people.

Since Trump’s win, Adams has begun attempts to scale back the city’s sanctuary designation, likely as a response to the large number of migrants who were dropped off on his doorstep, creating a crisis of both funding and housing in the city. Adams has taken many lumps over his response to the sudden influx of people, as well as the decision to house them in hotels around the city. An increase in violence at these locations, as well as in many tourist areas such as Times Square, has resulted in a lack of public faith in the leader; something he appears to be trying to remedy by cooperating with the incoming administration.

“New York remaining a sanctuary city is determined by the city council, I’m going to attempt to use my executive orders to go after dangerous people committing violent acts against migrants, asylum seekers, longtime New Yorkers, and undocumented immigrants. No one should be a victim of crime in this city – particularly violent crimes,” he has said.

At a news conference following his meeting with Homan, Adams defended New Yorkers saying that violent migrants will find no safe harbor in his city.

“We´re not going to be a safe haven for those who commit repeated violent crimes against innocent migrants, immigrants, and longstanding New Yorkers,” he declared. “That was my conversation today with the border czar, to figure out how to go after those individuals who are repeatedly committing crimes in our city.”
