As former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recounted some of the “darkest hours” of his life involving his adopted children, some wondered where his fury was when similar crimes were committed against conservatives.
Friday, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who leapfrogged to a cabinet position and is considered a top contender for the Democratic Party’s 2028 presidential nomination, shared details on how his family received a visit from Child Protective Services (CPS).
Writing for his Substack a day after NBC News highlighted the likely White House hopeful’s active campaigning for Democratic candidates, Buttigieg detailed how he was separated from the four-year-old twin boys he adopted with his homosexual partner, Chasten, and the unknown “harm it has done.”
“This week someone targeted my family for harm with a false report,” he captioned a link to his story on X. “We’re physically OK, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t harmed. I am beyond furious. Whatever your politics, this is awful, wrong, and can never become normal.”

Within the piece, Buttigieg explained how CPS came knocking on his door after a thirdhand allegation that the couple committed an unspecified crime against the children, requiring the boys to be subject to a forensic interview without a family member present.
“Afterwards, they would come back and interview me. And only then would they tell me anything about the nature of the allegation,” he wrote, though he himself did not elaborate on what the nature of the allegation was.
Instead, the politician referred to it as an “easily refuted allegation of a horrific crime” after outlining, “An anonymous caller had contacted CPS. The caller said that he had spoken to a woman who claimed to have met me at a conference several years ago in Alabama, where she said I told her that I had committed unspeakable violent crimes, and the caller believed my children were still at risk.”
According to the secretary, who infamously took paternity leave while the nation was suffering through a worsening supply chain crisis with cargo ships unable to offload freight, he’d never even been to the town named in the allegation.
Buttigieg’s tale of victimhood leaned into his homosexual lifestyle as he declared, “It’s not lost on me that this happened soon after we shared photos of our family on social media for Father’s Day. Or that this occurred during a month meant to make families like ours feel welcome and safe.”
He also expressed, “Even though the accusation was absurdly and obviously false, and was promptly rejected by law enforcement, I still worry about the harm it has done.”
Though a specific alleged crime was not mentioned by Buttigieg, it’s worth noting that several years ago, his “mentee,” disgraced former College Park, Maryland, mayor Patrick Wojahn, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after he pled guilty to 140 counts of possession and distribution of child pornography, having exploited 500 victims.
During the secretary’s time in the Biden administration, the pair had appeared together at White House events “Commemorating LGBTQ+ Pride Month” and reportedly exchanged regular phone calls dating back to 2015.
Acknowledging the severity of the crime from the “anonymous report,” Michigan State Police said in a statement to MS NOW, “False reports are dangerous and divert law enforcement officers and Child Protective Services workers from responding to legitimate emergencies and protecting vulnerable children and families.”
Meanwhile, though Buttigieg willingly brought up swatting in his tale, many on social media were quick to remind that similar sentiments were not expressed when he himself wasn’t the victim.
Hey, sorry this happened, but where were you last year when many conservatives were being swatted non-stop? My daughter had to leave her home with her two kids for 2 months and spend $25k on security upgrades. Now you know how it feels.

I’m sorry this happened to you, no one should be targeted with swatting for their political beliefs.

I think this is terrible. Not only because of the false accusations but because it specifically impacted children. And I condemn it.
Yet to my knowledge, Mr. Buttigieg had nothing to say when prominent conservatives were being swatted. It’s a common tactic predominantly employed… https://t.co/artEj0X6w6

CPS gets false calls on families every day across the country and nobody cares.
One politician gets a fake call on him and it is the end of the world…
Where have you outraged people been for the countless other families victimized?

I’m of the opinion that swatting is not acceptable in any form… Especially since this happened to me and my wife.
You were silent when that happened.
