Republican Senator Rand Paul is pushing back on President Donald Trump’s choice for labor secretary, claiming she is “very pro-labor.”
Paul is of the opinion that Lori Chavez-DeRemer would largely appeal to Democrats with her “pro-labor” views, but it isn’t something he is personally interested in. Speaking to Ryan Schmelz of Fox News Radio Sahil Kapur of NBC News, the senator revealed he would vote “no” at her confirmation.
“I think she’ll lose 15 Republicans and she’ll get 25 Democrats,” he predicted. “I mean, she’s very pro-labor. She might get all the Democrats. Who knows.”
The president has touted Chavez-DeRemer as a uniter of Americans who has the support of “business and labor communities.”
Thank you for this opportunity, President Trump!

“Lori has worked tirelessly with both business and labor to build America’s workforce, and support the hardworking men and women of America. I look forward to working with her to create tremendous opportunity for American workers, to expand training and apprenticeships, to grow wages and improve working conditions, to bring back our manufacturing jobs,” Trump wrote in his November 2024 announcement. “Together, we will achieve historic cooperation between business and labor that will restore the American Dream for working families.”
“Lori’s strong support from both the business and labor communities will ensure that the Labor Department can unite Americans of all backgrounds behind our agenda for unprecedented national success – Making America richer, wealthier, stronger and more prosperous than ever before!”
But her support among the Democrat Party may be more tenuous than Paul realizes, as business and labor groups came out in alarm following the news that Trump was considering Chavez-DeRemer for labor secretary.
Her support for the PRO Act, a pro-union, right-to-organize piece of legislation, was particularly concerning as the bill “has been repeatedly rejected on a bipartisan basis by Congress and opposed by business groups representing almost every industry,” said Kristen Swearingen, chair of the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace.
Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich agreed, saying “A co-sponsor of the Pro-Act as Labor Secretary? Absolutely not.”
