Suspect arrested near the White House

A person was arrested outside the White House on Monday after crashing a vehicle into the exterior gate of the Executive Mansion.

The accident happened just before 6 p.m., according to the Secret Service, which is investigating the “cause and manner” of the incident.

“Shortly before 6p.m., a vehicle collided with an exterior gate on the White House complex. The driver has been taken into custody & we are investigating the cause & manner of the collision. Expect traffic implications at 15th Street & Pennsylvania Ave & adjacent intersections,” Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi said in a tweet.

In a follow-up, Guglielmi said, “The vehicle has been cleared by Washington DC Police Department and traffic closures will be lifted. Driver remains in custody and our investigation continues. Special thanks to @DCPoliceDept [and] @dcfireems for your unwavering support and partnership.”

Reuters shared a video that appears to capture the vehicle involved in the accident:

President Joe Biden was not in the White House at the time — the 81-year-old president traveled to South Carolina on Monday, where he was heckled by pro-Hamas protesters while driving racial discord at the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Church, the site where nine black parishioners were shot to death in 2015.

Just last month, as noted by Reuters, a Delaware man crashed his vehicle into Biden’s motorcade. The driver was charged with drunk driving as a result of the accident.
